I am soon going to need a new exhaust system and the dealers here in AUS want a fortune for a complete setup. My query is this, an exhaust specialist fabricator here has told me he can do it an given me a price which is almost half of the Jeep dealers, he has also told me I can cut a considerable lot more off if I do away with the converters. The sensors on this model are at each end of the converters, so, if I were to fit the threads at the same distance apart on the new system without the converters, would the EMS pick up the difference and cause problems with the engine running?
(O.K. before I get warnings from EPA "experts" lets consider this as purely theoretical eh?)
I did a similar thing on a Nissan Pulsar years ago and the MPG went from 34 to well over 40.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The "down steam O2 sensors",the ones on the back side of the cat's, measure how the cat's are doing. If no cat is there they will "follow" the upstream O2 sensors which effect power, mpg's,and emissions you will get those 2 nice codes P0420 and P0430.

There is a reason OEM cat's are very pricey, they work, they flow the best(even better the high flow cat's),and actually do there job correctly.

Are you required to have cats on the vehicle? Or I should say, do you have to go through emissions testing?
One popular trick is to use spark plug extensions (drilled out to clear the O2 sensor) between the post-cat sensor and bung fitting. That can create enough of a reading difference where the system thinks there is still a cat in place.

There might be someone from the environmental standards board in Melbourne or Sydney but everywhere else they wouldn't know anything about pollution!
