I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has used a rooftop cargo bag or hard carrier on their KJ. How did it work, and what type/size did you use? Thanks!

Lots of options for sure! What are kinds of stuff are you planning to put onto the roof?
I had considered a cargo lock box like this..

But ended up with a low profile more aerodynamic Rola roof basket to add stuff up top when needed.

Keep in mind loading stuff on roof may require a step stool.
I carry a 2 Step sturdy aluminum in Jeep when camping, and it gets used.

Both Thule & Rola has some nice waterproof bags, that can go up top at a reasonable price on cross bars.
Many may also opt for large square ones to mount to rear, for easier accessibility, compared to the roof.

Just some ideas...

I have all three types illustrated above,
An enclosed sport rack cargo carrier for carrying luggage that must not get wet( mine is larger than the one in the illustration),
A hitch rack for carrying my wife's mobility scooter , and a roof basket for carrying the spare tire whenever I'm using the hitch rack to transport the scooter.

The hitch rack/scooter caused the rear springs to sag almost 2 inches, I had to add AIRLIFT airbags to restore the rear ride height to 19 1/4 inches.

In my experience none have any deleterious effect on fuel economy

This is for luggage, so needs to be weather-resistant. We are looking at rooftop carriers, either bag or hard-case. Thanks for the replies.
