I'm picking up a 2006 Jeep Liberty on Saturday. I'd like to mount a safari type cargo basket on the roof. Surco makes one that looks good, but I don't know if it will fit this jeep. I want one that can be mounted easily to the existing factory rails, and will accept accessories for clipping on stuff to the sides, like shovels, brooms, and such. What's out there that won't break the bank?

Well what is cheap and won't break the bank, but strong enough to hold what you want is two different things
I had a cheap rack on my 04 back in 06-07 mounted down nice and low, looked good but wasn't that strong at all when it came down to it.
reason I went with a Rock Lizard, haul anything tie anything to it

So just be real careful of what you buy

Libertyfever had a surco mounted on the kj with a picture on post 12.
And riptricket post #23 has one with some nice pics, page 3.

The Surco is aluminum and around 28lbs. The rola basket is 50 lbs of steel.
I also have the sleek Rola basket, and use it for camp tents, folding chairs, lighter stuff mainly.

OK, I went to Amazon to buy a Surco cargo basket. But according to Amazon the Surco racks don't fit the Jeep Liberty? I checked Surco's web site and it says the S4550 fits the 2006 Liberty. What's the deal?

Don't rely on the fitment recommendations on Amazon. When I selected the MOPAR 52080118AB radiator for my 2005 Liberty Limited 3.7, Amazon said it wouldn't fit. It is, in fact, the correct part and it was installed with no problems or modifications.

Here's the cargo rack. Took about three hours, working alone.

Nice length
but any way to drop it down a few inches , lower won't catch as much air
The one I had just fit down between the rails keeping it nice and low

I'm interested in this as well for our new-to-us 2002 Liberty for the summer family vacation. Do these come with the cross-bars? If not, which ones do you recommend?

This is the Surco safari cargo basket. It came with cross bars but it may have been additional money. Check with them on their website. Their customer service is real good, and there is a video on Youtube that reviews the basket and shows how to install it.

I should also mention the installation is not complex but it will be a lot more pleasant if you get another set of hands to help.
