Much like poster Tigers28, I want some new tires for my '04 Jeep Liberty Sport. I'm taking it in to death valley in a month or so, and I want some more rugged tires with the rims I currently have.

215/75-16 is what I'm working with.

I'm probably just going to go into DV with the tires that are currently on it. I did the same thing last year with a Ford Escape that I had rented and had no problems traversing the passes to get in to the valley. I imagine my Jeep will be able to do the same.

I'd still like larger tires though, just to get a little bit more clearance off the ground. Any suggestions?

I have 235/70R16's on mine stock. I think that's about the biggest you could go without a lift. Might be able to run a 245/70R16 depending on how much your springs have sagged.

I'm not familiar with wheels and tires whatsoever, aside from what I've learned about sizings and such on forums within the last day or so.

The rim size I have is 16x7J - am I to understand that I can fit tire sizes 215/75-16 (which is what's on them now) as well as 235/70-16?

If so, this opens up a lot more possibilities for me... there doesn't seem to be many options for tires with a size of 215/75-16.

Libertys came stock with both 215/75s and 235/70s so those are both options for you. The consensus on here seems to be that the largest you can go without lift is 245/70. I have 245/75 on my non-lifted 2003 but it rubs at full lock

Metric tire sizing 101: Hope this helps

215/70-16

215 = width across the tire face in MM
70 = sidewal hieght in that the sidewall will be 70% of the width, or 215 x .7 = 150.5.

16 = rim diameter (406.4mm)

Here's where it gets tricky...

Your 215/70-16 is essentially 215 (8.5") wide by 707.4 (27.9") in diameter.
(diameter = (2x sidewal)+rim diameter.)

so... a 235/65-16 is almost an inch wider (9.3"), yet just about the same overall diameter (28.0").

Just as a side note. In metric tire sizes a 235/75-16 is not the same diameter as a 235/75-17. The 17" tire will be an inch taller than the 16" one.

The problem is that when you start running numbers and figure out just what tire you want to run, you then find out it might not be a "standard" size that is readily available... That's why it's best to get a tire shop involved. The size you want may be available, but may be more expensive than a more standard size. The 235/65-17 tires for my Liberty were more expensive then the 265/75-16 for my full size Dogde PU - Same tire. Same store. The truck tires were larger overall, yet a more common size.

Running 245/70-16's Yokohama Geolanders on my 2005 liberty stock with no rubbbing at all and I love them.
