Backup Camera

Anyone ever install a backup camera on there KJ? I just got one that mounts to the rear plate and runs a wire to my HU (aftermarket).

Everyone has opinions on this stuff but where I work I get in alot of cars with back up cameras and I honestly don't feel right just looking at the screen, I still just use the mirrors as I normally would. I think it is just something else to break but just my opinion (blarg)

Your probably right about another thing to break. Especially since its easy to be hit by another parked car. That all being said, i'm a gadget guy. I like this crap. Since my HU has a connection for it, I decided I would pick up a cheap one on ebay. The camera is a no name device probably from China. It cost $25 with the shipping. It came with the camera and about 25feet of RCA cable to connect to the HU. I definitely agree it should be used with caution. There is nothing like turning around or checking the mirrors. I'll try to post some pics after I complete the install this weekend.

I want one so i can gauge he distance. Ill still use mirrors to line up but for final aproach ill use tv. Im about to swap my HU so ill grab a cam to go with it.

I will say they are extra assurance, only if you check the old way, otherwise it's a false sense of security, in my opinion.

Truth is since we are higher off the ground (some lifted), you can't be to cautious. Especially in my neighborhood where there is a lot of kids.

A back up cam on a KJ is that thing I would ever thing of. In my opinion I think the KJ is too small to call for that. If I was towing a trailer.camper than I'd have one on the back of that but not the KJ itself. Next you'll see someone wanting to put a back up came on a Smart car

Turn around when backing up & look out your windows. It is the ONLY way one should drive in reverse. I can't believe everyone dosen't do this. Mirrors have serious blind spots & depth perception can't be accurate using a camera with a fisheye/wide angle lens. Another example of the "Lazification of America"

To be honest I don't turn and look behind me either when backing up I use my Mirrors. I also drive a company Van all day. It's a 2500 Series Chevy Express Van. There is no option to turn around and look behind me b/c of the metal wall between the cabin and cargo area. Plus I don't have any side windows beides the front doors.So turning around is useless and all I have are mirrors to use when backing up.

Yes, I am aware only Superman has the capability to which you refer.

Your sarcasm notwithstanding, those appear to be the exceptions to the rule. And as an exception, they use non-standard, specialized mirrors, with which most regular vehicles are not equipped, including my KJ.

I'm not bashing anyone as this is just my opinion, but there are plenty of instances where incidents, however minor can be avoided just by turning around & looking while driving in reverse. Don't be so damn lazy people.

X11tybillion. This cannot be said enough. I have cousins who don't even think to look behind them while backing and they wonder why they hit so much stuff?

They're not really designed to replace the rear view mirror. It's a suppliment, nothing more. Backup cameras should be aimed so that they point down to the pavement behind you, below your line of sight. It's so you don't run over the bike or skateboard left by your kids right below the rear bumper. Or you avoid the stupid 3' pole at the gas pumps, or (god forbid) you don't run over the 2 year old who just stumbled back there while mom had her back turned (happened to a neighbor of mine years ago).

So before everyone gets all hot'n'heavy, there's nothing wrong with them if they're aimed properly. They can actually be a nice extra safety device. But if you simply point them back where your eyes can already see, then it's a waste of time.

I have seen a driver backed up on his daughter because he didnt see her right behind his jeep. The poor kid ended up without her left arms.

Just dont want to see those things.

I agree, as long as it's aimed correctly. Life happens. When reversing a truck, all modes of 'lookback' should be utilized, mirrors improve the speed in which we can scan a wide angle behind the vehicle. Physical look back can get into *some* blindspots the mirrors miss. Rolling down window and head out drivers side lookback can give you a direct, real time view of the relationship of the left-rear quadrant of the vehicle in relation to other objects, sans mirror distortions, and lastly, a backup camera below the line of site, in the blindspots that both mirrors and lookbacks both suffer, can be a very helpful safety addition.

In fact, I hear tell there's this new fanlged alarm system that beeps and stuff if you get too close to objects as you back up. I don't have one, but it's still a nice addition. Not a replacement for looking back and mirrors, but again, a suppliment to them.

I mean, we wouldn't need all those airbags if people would just drive right...

I'd want one if I got into boating again.....easier to hook up...
