I didn't realize the Jeeps have the integrated key and fob. I am looking at getting either an '05 or an '06 - I assume these are the same way?

I'm curious to know, do the Jeeps require a specific key to work, or can a general old-fashioned metal key work to unlock the doors and start the car? I ask because most likely I'll end up having a remote starter installed at some point, and with my current car, I haven't used the stock key fob in over 5 years. The car has no theft deterrent system though ('99 Grand Prix, no passkey in it).

the keys have a chip in them. a metal key will open the doors, but it won't allow the jeep to run more than a second. once the computer confirms that the chip isn't present the jeep turns itseslf off.

as for remote starts, i don't know how they work around the chip.

btw, the keys with the chip aren't cheep to replace.

i know our '02 had the gray key. it had the chip in it, but the fob was seperate. i'm not sure what the cut off was for the gray key to the integrated fob was. logically one would think that a grey key would work, but i don't know.

a couple of things though. you would have to find an un-cut key. since they are for the previous generation you would most likely have to do an ebay type of purchase. also, in order to program the chip to your jeep yourself you will need two keys that are already programed. if you don't have two keys, then the dealer will have to program it (which nothing from a dealer is cheap).

cool, thanks for the info. Glad to know this - as I'll most likely be buying from a dealer, I'll make sure I get two good keys and two good fobs.
