New to the site and Jeep ownership...but I have a 2002 Liberty Sport 3.7L. The "part time" light is on all the time, but the Jeep is in 2wd. When attempting to shift into 4hi or 4lo, the shift handle moves but it doesn't actually shift. There's no resistance in the handle.

I took it to a dealer and they said it was just a 4wd indicator switch...I'm a little skeptical because it doesn't feel like the shift handle is doing anything at all.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like 2 issues:

1. The indicator switch is bad
2. The transfer case shift cable might have popped off the lever. You'll have to get underneath and see what you can see.

My cable hasn't been reconnected here, so you can see the lever and the new switch:

The part that you need is called a transfer case shifter bushing and the electronic part is called transfer case position sensor.

Thanks guys. I'll take a look into it. I got under it earlier this afternoon for an oil change and realized the previous owner installed a Rusty's skid plate. It'll have to be removed before I can see anything, but I'll let you know if I get it sorted out.

The cable has a tendency to pop off the shift lever. Look there first before (possibly needlessly) removing the skid plate.

The cable popped off at the transfer case. This caused then loose cable to rub against the driveshaft and it's now frayed pretty badly. Looks like a need a new shifter cable but don't want to pay $300 for one at the dealer. Any ideas on where to find one? I already checked google and local junkyards.

Alright so I got the bushing on and the Jeep now shifts normally into 4Hi and 4Lo. The problem is it won't shift back to 2Hi unless I manually move the lever on the transfer case. Is there any way to adjust the cable/shift mechanism so the shift handle inside the cab will get me back to 2Lo?
