So I just got my '05 KJ back from the shop (I broke the bracket on the rear diff), and got it all detailed and took pictures as I'm getting ready to sell. As I'm cleaning I lifted up on the 4wd shifter and low and behold it's moving freely.

I got underneath to make sure the cable was attached to the TC, which it was. Had my son move the shifter while I was underneath to watch the cable and there was no movement. Took out the center console and everything is attached as it should be.

Has anyone heard of the cable breaking? It's the only reason I can think of that it is moving freely like that.

After researching the part online, the only part I've found is this:

SHIFTER. Transfer Case for 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. #52129243AG

Is it possible to just replace the cable or do I need to replace the entire assembly?

Has anyone replaced this assembly before? I'm trying to off this Jeep and would like to do the repair myself if possible.

Thanks,

Joe

Did you check the cable end at the sifter? That bushing is bad for wearing out and alowing the cable to pop off the shifter. That bushing is replaceable.

Yeah. It was connected and I had my son move the shifter and it didn't move. I've since disconnected the bushing. My only guess is the cable broke. Just want to make sure I'm ordering the right part.

looks right to me. I checked the part fische as well.

this place may be cheaper.
SHIFTER-TRANSFER CASE | Genuine Mopar | 52129243AG

ships out from avondale, Phx.
they started charging shipping but it might still save you a few bucks and might get to you faster if they have it in stock.
Call the parts guy, Josh. It's actually a larry h miller dealership with an online store with good prices.

Thanks! Too bad you have to replace the whole dang thing instead of just the cable. What a hassle.
