2004 Jeep Liberty Limited

I am currently in the process of purchasing a 2004 Liberty Limited. We traded my wifes 2 door G5 in for this.

Reasons:
Need 4 doors for when we have kids.
Want to pull a camper.

questions:

Will this car be able to pull a camper?
Is there a tow package we can put on it?
How can I tell if it has a tow package?

A quick response would be great.

It is not a car. It is a jeep. It is rated for 5,000lbs tow capacity with the 3.7L and A/T. Look and see if it has a factory hitch (with 7 prong receptacle-as that is how they came from the factory) installed and check/get a build sheet from the jeep dealer. They should be able to tell you.

5k tow capacity? nice so a pop up should be no problem, but I did not notice a tow hitch on it, does that mean I am not going to able to tow with it? Or can I add an after market one?

Other problem is it is used from the Toyota dealer. Not sure if they will have a build sheet. Guess I could call the local Jeep dealer with the VIN and find out.
Also I am not sure what I am looking at either as I am a newbie to this. a hitch with a 7prong receptacle? Is this something I couldn't miss?

Keep in mind I have not looked at it today once as my wife drives it to work. I will look closer when she gets home.

hitch is a 15 minute job to install
if you need a 4 prong wiring check etrailer they have some that work great
if you need 7 prong then more wiring is needed

What is the difference between a 4 and 7 prong? I would imagine something to do with the brake lights and reverse lights, etc.

Look to see how many prongs your trailer has. Most are just 4 prong.

most smaller trailers and pop ups have the 4 prong, when you get into electric brakes, extra batteries in the trailer that you want to charge going down the road then you get into 7 prong
you may also want to pick up a 12 mm X 1.75 tap to get the rust out of the threads for the hitch.

No hitch on the rear means no towing package.The towing package on a KJ includes a hitch,7 pin connector(and wiring),and the biggie is HD cooling.With the correct tow package a 3.7 auto trans KJ can tow 5000lbs,without the complete tow package it's 3500lbs.Being it's a '04 that means it has the 42RLE trans and with HD cooling I still wouldn't tow close to 5k with it,maybe 2k and that's stressing that trans pretty good with only a stand alone cooler which can not control temp spikes seen when towing.

That sounds like your best bet then you can be sure of towing capacity of your Jeep.

The Liberty "tow package" includes a transmission cooler, a clutch fan on the front of your water pump (different radiator electric fan shroud), the round 7 pin trailer wiring plug and of course the hitch.

If the camper you want to pull weighs less than 2,000 lbs then maybe you could get away without a complete tow package.

HD cooling could be added without the towing package.They used to have a really cheap HD cooling package,not anymore so what once cost $240 now will cost you over $500 in parts.

None the less I should be ok to put a class 2 or 3 hitch on the Liberty and be able to pull a pop up camper. It wont be too big. Well this is what I am feeling anyway
