Hey Guys,
Sorry in advance my Girlfriend owns a '01 Grand Cherokee. I owned a '04 Liberty and know how helpful you guys are so before starting new on those forums I figured I would start here first. Ok so the other day she complained that her Jeep was "freaking out" I went to look at it she had no gauges nothing. The Jeep was running like crap. We got it running and got it home. So thinking its the cluster took it apart and found nothing put it back together and it worked. I was going to do a tune up and told her not to drive anywhere unless she had too. So now the car is broken down at the Mall...lol. There is no response from the gauges but the gauges do work I tried the trick you use in case the stick gets stuck below the peg. I start up the car and it runs for what sounds like on cycle of each cylinder and then shuts off and I get the anti theft key light. No auto lights either. I think it might be the PCM but I cannot ignore that it might be the SKIM. But this is where I am a bit hung up do I try and replace the PCM first or go for the SKIM and new keys. Or is it just something I am not seeing? Please any help will be much appreciated. Also there is no code other than P1686 which is the SKIM code.

Thanks,
Matt

Yeah sounds like the SKIM.

Try the other key first to see if it works.
If the SKIM key symbol flashes constantly then the code sent by the SKIM module to the PCM was not recognised.

If the SKIM key light is constantly ON then the PCM recognised the code from the SKIM module but did not get confirmation from the Auto Shut Down (ASD) relay that it...the ASD relay....had energised.

If you have the SKIM light ON all the time....try swapping the ASD relay with an identical one or try shorting out the ASD relay contact points out. I had a problem with my KJ whereby the relay was not getting power due to a broken wire....by shorting out the contact pins I fooled the PCM that the relay had in fact energised and was able to drive home.
