My 06 has done this every time it gets close to freezing since I bought it about 3 years ago. I just assumed it was normal. My only suggestion is to leave the block heater plugged in overnight. It really helps with that first cold start.

I think it'll be ok. I've had a 2.5 gallon can strapped to the spare tire for about 2 years with no sign of wear to the tailgate. I realize the jerry can is heavier, but it's sitting closer to the hinge, and not sticking out nearly as far. Time will tell, but so far, I don't forsee any problems.

I just made this last weekend. Took about $50 in materials from ace hardware, a welder, a grinder and exactly one six pack of angry orchard. This is my first post, btw.
