    Front driveshaft noise?

I figured it was the driveshaft cv joint. I was mainly wondering if it was safe to drive. No matter. Got to it today. It was the driveshaft cv joint. Driveshaft removed for now. Thanks Bob

    Front driveshaft noise?

Oh, one more odd thing. I don't seem to hear it after the jeep had been sitting for a while, like overnight or all day while I'm at work, but then I start to hear it after I have been driving for a bit, like 15 minutes or so. Weird.

    Front driveshaft noise?

I have read and read about this but I still have a question. I am getting a noise that sounds like it's coming from under the center of the jeep. It's a 2002 4wd part-time Liberty. If started out as a clicking a couple days ago which I noticed when I was pulling up to a stop sign. It has...

    P0740 tranny code

Sounds like you passed the brake tap test, my rpms hold steady when I tap the brake. Interesting though, I would not expect the rpms to go up on an incline unless you speed up since the torque converter locking makes a 1:1 locked connection between engine rpm and vehicle speed. I woiuld expect...

    P0740 tranny code

The brake tap test. Cruise in 4th around 50-60 mph on flat highway light throttle steasy for like 10 seconds, this should lock the torque converter. Then tap the brakes lightly, staying stay on the throttle, and your rpms should go up a couple/few hundred. The idea is that tapping the brakes...

    P0740 tranny code

I've been getting that code for a few weeks now, Clear it and it comes back. Mine always comes back when I've been cruising at 70 or 75 on the highway for a bit. Mine is an 02 42rfe. It does not appear the converter is locking. I do the brake tap test and nothing happens. It shifts great into...

Rough idle turns into bigger problem! Help

Not necessarily done. If the bottom end is in good shape you don't need to scrap it. I put rebuilt heads on mine, with all valve seats replaced. I just replaced those two pistons, new timing chain set, some other misc. Under $1300 I have an engine I expect to run for another 130k. been back...

Weird crank but no start (long)

It's been a little bit, but the jeep is back on the road. Turns out the rebuilt head I bought on the Internet was bad. I removed the driver side head and cleaned the block surface with a Roloc bristle disk and used a new Felpro head gallery and reinstalled. Ran a leakdown test and was still...

    Replacing heads gasket question

The ebay MLS gaskets I got seemed like the coating was thin, almost like paint or e-coat. Felpro gaskets have a Viton rubber coating to better tolerate surface imperfections. The difference is obvious. However, the ebay gasket worked fine I believe. I still have the ebay gasket on one head...

Rough idle turns into bigger problem! Help

Be careful if any of the "dings" in the piston crown extend out to the edge of the piston. If that is the case you likely have pinched/cracked/broken the ring grooves on the piston. This was the bad one from the top and then what it looked like when I pulled it. This one was a...

Weird crank but no start (long)

Well, I don't mean to make this sound like this is awful for me. I mean, I hate doing things twice, but I enjoy working on cars, I have the tools and garage and it's a spare car so I'd much rather spend the time than the money. And I'm always willing to learn, and mistakes are a good way to...

Weird crank but no start (long)

So, got the jeep running today, but still not good news. My saga continues. The engine ran but it was blowing white smoke. I let it warm up to operating temp in case it was just burning things off but it got no better. I began to fear a problem with my head gasket installation. I decided...

    Coolant leak

The freeze plug on the back of my passenger head was dripping. It dripped down on the exhaust pipe. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from because it is behind the head next to the firewall, right under the coolant reservoir. Eventually and suddenly it went from a drip to a leak and I...

Weird crank but no start (long)

For closure, it turned out to be timing, but not exactly the "off by one tooth" issue. I said it was weird, and weird it turned out to be. I got a new compression gauge and did compression test, and passenger side was fine but the whole drivers side bank was very low, like 20-40. So that...

Weird crank but no start (long)

We've been working on the 2002 liberty 3.7l for a bit now, since it dropped a valve seat. In summary, engine was pulled, a couple pistons replaced, new timing set installed, heads were replaced with remanned heads. The engine is now back in. When we first put the engine back in, we...

Remove head without removing timing cover

I put my engine in and out with the garage door open, rolled up on tracks above the engine bay, so I'm sure I didn't even have 10 feet. Key is to use the minimum amount of chain length. We used pretty short chain and a load leveler with short chains so had plenty of headroom. So, a little...

Remove head without removing timing cover

Hmm. I ordered the warner clamps. They are what rock auto listed. Is that what you had that didn't work? Thanks for the advice on the cats. Bob

Remove head without removing timing cover

So, a bit of an update. Got the rest of the trans bolts in, including the torque converter bolts. Got the starter on, spun it and confirmed compression in all cylinders. Got the intake on, plugs in, fuel rail and injectors and coii packs in, connected all the electrical connectors and...

    Fuel injector question

Thanks. We'll I guess we'll give it a go today and see how we do. Thanks Bob

    Fuel injector question

Bummer. No one ever lost one of these and tried the injector without it and had success or failure? Obviously I can try it but with all the other variables of a rebuilt engine I'd like to minimize chances for having to troubleshoot issues that may have nothing to do with the rebuild. Thanks Bob
