The Official "My Gas Mileage Sucks" Thread

Air filter does nothing to improve fuel economy. NOTHING. I've already explained that the throttle is what limits the amount of air to your engine more than anything. That's it's purpose, to restrict airflow to the engine. That's what's being "throttled". A free flowing filter might allow a...

HOW TO: Change Transfer Case Position Switch

Well, it took me 11 minutes the first time. I imagine it would take 5 minutes if I ever had to do it again now that I know that shifting into 4Lo makes it much easier. I explain in this thread how I did it...

    Ding! Glass open warning

I'm pretty sure the chime was due to an aftermarket alarm system I found installed under the steering column. It had a sensitivity adjustment, and I set it to be less sensitive. I never had the glass warning again after that, but then again it always was intermittent, and I sold the Jeep shortly...

The Official "My Gas Mileage Sucks" Thread

Slowing to 65 mph would improve your MPG significantly. I found that my 2002 would either shift into overdrive, or lock the torque converter at 60 mph. The tach would show 2000 RPM at 55 mph, and slowly climb until I hit 60 mph, at which point it dropped back down to 2000 RPM again. I'd say...

    Ding! Glass open warning

2 years later and I still have the Jeep. I've had the chance to use low range just once, climbing up an extremely steep mountain that overlooks Smith Rock state park. It was nice being able to leisurely crawl up the boulder strewn path instead of having to get a running start and floor the gas...

The Official "My Gas Mileage Sucks" Thread

:smokin: I have never used an illicit drug, and I question everything people tell me. That's why I am correct more often than not. 70 years ago engines used carburetors. Carbs do not have the ability to adjust to changes in air density and essentially run in "open-loop" mode. As elevation...

    Ding! Glass open warning

My roommate was deported back to Australia and sold many of his belongings to me at a good price. I figured I would drive it for the summer, fix the few minor problems, and then sell for a small profit. I've got a full-size diesel truck and a car, so this doesn't really fill any need of mine...

The Official "My Gas Mileage Sucks" Thread

Incorrect. Fuel injected engines routinely get better fuel economy at higher altitude for 2 reasons. The first is that the thinner air is easier to push through, which is very important in a vehicle that gave no consideration to aerodynamics. The second reason is that the throttle must be opened...

    Ding! Glass open warning

I didn't see the evap canister, but I didn't look too carefully. Instead I examined all of the hoses that were attached to the fuel tank and what I believe is the fuel pump. I tightened all hoses/clamps that I could find. There were no cracks, but I did find 1 hose that didn't have a clamp on...

HOW TO: Change T-case Position Sensor - Quick Method Under Vehicle

The "part-time" light was flickering on my '02 Liberty, especially when I was decelerating. I was concerned that it was engaging 4-wheel drive, but it turns out it wasn't. The sensor merely indicates the mode that the transfer case is in (when it's working properly). The part was $64 shipped...

HOW TO: Change Transfer Case Position Switch

I just changed out my T-case position sensor. The part was $64 shipped from MoparOnlineParts.com It was very easy to change out from underneath the vehicle. The Jeep was already on stands because I changed brake rotors/pads, so I figured it was a good time to swap out the sensor. It took 1min...

    Ding! Glass open warning

UPDATE: I tore the back trim piece off of the tailgate and tested the function of the glass latch switch. Everything tested good, and even jiggling the latch around caused no erratic switch readings. Here is the reading with the latch open, properly showing the switch is closed. With the...

    Air intake scoop

Even if it increased airflow, it would not increase fuel economy. That's a common misconception. Other things are restricting the intake more than that scoop anyhow. Biggest restriction is the throttle, which is restricting airflow anytime you have the pedal at less that mashed to the floor.

    towing questions

Excessively slipping the clutch is what burns it up. Just like brake pads, the clutch pads can get too hot and glaze over. A burned clutch will smell similar to burned brakes. From the sound of it, you shouldn't have any problems towing.

    Ding! Glass open warning

I just bought a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 3.7L w/ 104k miles for $5k. Well, now for the problems... 1. While driving, every 10 seconds or so I get a ding, the interior lights come on, and the odometer displays "glass". From what I have learned from Google, there is a switch in the rear glass...

The Official "My Gas Mileage Sucks" Thread

The first part is correct, but the second part does not follow. Hot air is less dense, which means less wind resistance. Driving at altitude or in hot weather will increase fuel efficiency since less air must be pushed around.
