Yep wipers definitely need to come off. I cut out some charcoal filter material and put it over the under-hood part. The air coming in to the interior has smelled a little cleaner since then. I check it every oil change.
Well considering where I've lived being in the Navy, it was inevitable if I didn't keep an eye on it. I've since been diligent about preventing it from happening on my other doors.
