I used Plasti Dip on the wheels and it has held up very well. I just masked the rims off but some people use a deck of cards slid in around the rim which may be easier. One thing I forgot to do was to wrap some lug nuts (old ones if you have them) in masking tape and lay them in the rim to...
Surprisingly not slippery. They have grooves from one end to the other.
Oh, and the roof rack is new as well. The old one gave me ten years of faithful service but was really piling on the rust.
They are pretty solid but I wouldn't want to actually try and slide them across any serious rocks. (Playful, carefree rocks and I might take a chance.) ;)

I agree with that. Had they said "We can do a bunch of minor checks and maybe spend four hours chasing a wild goose, but we recommend pulling the head and starting there. Your call" then I would have more confidence in their pre-diagnosis.
I'd be leery of having people work on it who sound like they are only guessing to begin with. If all you wanted was a dumb guess you could have come to me. :D

The grey tabby died on Jan 1st. The black one passed away this morning, resulting in the same sad trip to the vet. My Jeep has become more of a hearse than anything else at this point.
