My 07 liberty's airbag light comes on and off, the dealer, now out of warr, states this fix is 265 dollars, however it is not effecting anything, is there an easy way to make this go away? Cheaply, is there a fuse, etc.

Only the dealer has the test equipment to diagnose Air-bag system.
What exactly was costing $265 a part or hint of what is wrong would be helpful.

For one the airbags will not function if you get in a accident and if someone dies they will check the airbag system and if it was not functioning your insurance will not cover anything or the other insurance company(if your not at fault) will not have to pay either and your all on your own for any bills and such.

Suddenly $265 at the dealer to fix air bags sounds like a reasonable plan.

Exactly what did they say was wrong with it and what needed to be done to fix it?

I am just curious.

check the sensor that is right next to the radiator.
Is on the drivers side, make sure is plugged in properly.

I'm also curious as to what could be causing this. I've had this on my 2002 intermittently for 6 months.

Air bag light stays on in my '02 90% 0f the time, been like this for past two years.Have checked wires under the seats,it will go out for a few days then on for weeks. I just hope it works if needed, and doesn't go off just for the heck of it.

Sure would like to hear what is being replaced in most situations, to get the air bag light off and have a safe working system.
Last thing you need is one of those going off for no reason, I have heard of it happening when the system is not maintained.
Light on= WTF?

I had an intermitant air bag light coming and going on my 2002 2.5 CRD. I knew it was due to the connection that sits just above the steering column; I would clean and re-tension the contacts and then it would work fine for a while. Eventualy I got tired of this bad connector and bypassed the connector by directly soldering wires accross it. If you remove the panel that you knock your knees on, you can find this connector, four wires if I remember correctly, going up to the clockspring in the steering wheel; try wriggle this around and see if your airbag light comes on/off. It could also be your clockspring is starting to fail but it could also be any one of the other airbags in the vehicle that has a bad connection.

Yeah, I was told after the check that the sensor plug in may have rattled loose that is whats putting the light on and off, they saaid it would not effect airbag deployment and it just comes on and off constastly though, I was just trying to alliviate it, I certainly do not want to cut it off so the airbag doesnt work, I was looking for the light to go away and still feel like I can feed my kids this week :)

You obviously misunderstood me, I did not bypass, ie. disable the airbag connection....I just made sure that I had a good connection! The plug I am refering to is a male/female (obviously) four pin plug that sits,as I said, just above the steering column behind the panel that you smack your knees on. In my case I could measure that some of these male/female connections within this connector were not making good contact so I effectively marked which wire went to which wire (they changed colour from the male side to the female side), cut off the connectors and wrapped and soldered and insulated the appropiate wires together so as so make a permanent connection. It is interesting to note that the plug going up to the actual airbag has a solid metal plate that shorts all of the connectors positions together the instant the male/female sections are pulled apart..obviously to short out the airbag from possible external static or wrong connection that could trigger the airbag to go off the instant you pull the two halves of the connector apart. As I said, it could also be your clockspring or a connector from one of the other airbags that is loose, not just the drivers' airbag connector which is what I am describing here! If you cannot get the airbag light to flicker when you jiggle this connector...best to take it to a dealer to find the problem!

Ok

Ok Bill, I just want to make sure the connector you are referring to will not cause the airbag to go off in my 07 which would be alot more than the 260ish. I will go home tonight and look at the sheet the dealer gave me to explain exactly what their saying in their words which is much more helpful than mine, thanks all, I will let you guys know either way.

You can change the clockspring yourself. This is actually not a "spring" but is a flat strip of flexable plastic with flexable copper strips inside. The purpose of this device is to enable your horn button, main airbag, radio and cruise control buttons to be able to be passed into the rest of the vehicle while the steerring wheel is rotating. They call it a clockspring because it has the shape of the spring in an old windup watch or clock. You have to remove the steering wheel...two 8mm bolts, remove the steering wheel...first mark its position so as to get it back in the correct postion; you may need a gear puller to pull the steering wheel off. Pull the connectors off the clockspring and remove the clockspring while taking note of its position...it has a few turns of coil on it.Replace everything in reverse. If in doubt, get the dealer to do the procedure.

If there is a break in the wires going to the airbag,it is sensed and the light goes on. If the wires are broken, there is no chance of power going to the airbag to activate it so your airbag will definitely not inflate when you need it to.....best to have it fixed!
