I got hit by a truck last week driver side rear bumper. It was a hard hit as it moved the Jeep 5’. However the damage was a broken bumper cover and tail light. I got a cover from Amazon and paint with a clear coat step. The cover was shipped flat so no bends. Cover came primed for paint. Should I just wipe clean with alcohol and paint?

You will need to scuff it with 400-600 grit or a burgundy scotchbrite pad. The scotchbrite pad is closer to 320 grit so go easy if you use.

I would stop by a body shop and get a small amount of wax/grease remover and buy a cheap tak-cloth. Paint away.

THANK YOU! Do you think the old hardware, snaps, etc can be reused? I saw there was another thread about a gent who swapped out his bumper cover and had part numbers from AMAZON, however I can’t find it now.

I don’t know about the specific hardware for a KK as I’ve never replaced one. But in general if you were careful removing the hardware I wouldn’t have a problem reusing it. Have a good look at it first to make sure it is in decent shape. If there are some of the clips etc that aren’t in great shape, generally an auto parts store will carry a selection of these type fasteners. Take in a sample and you should be able to match it.

Sometimes they use plastic rivets that are not reusable. If so I would see if you can borrow a rivet gun or just buy a cheap one ( Harbour Freight?)

When you paint don’t get in a hurry to cover in one coat.l ( like I always do). Keep the first coat light and tacked up well before proceeding. Also when sanding try not to break through the primer coat.

Good luck!

I was also guilty of the ONE coat cover, but have changed some. is it necessary to lightly sand between coast? I have some of the plastic push rivets from my Carver 390 that may work? next warm day i will paint the cover, got some 500 grit for the scuffing up. THANK YOU!

Do not sand between coats unless you get a run or bunch of dirt. If you have to sand, use wet paper and be very gentle.

I am replacing the rear bumper cover as someone hit me. The new cover from Amazon came to me with black primer. Scuffed it up with 600 grit and so far I have 3 coats of base coat and still looks like black instead of the deep metallic green. Should I stop rough up again and use gray primer ?
