Coolant temp sensor not seated ?

2007 Jeep Liberty, when changing Coolant temp sensor I noticed the connector was not seated onto the sensor ( does not click on ) I removed the sensor and tried again but does not click on. I bought a new connector and sensor but still does not attach all of the way, any ideas ? Also the radiator does not have the radiator side air seal, (rubber flaps) they are there for a reason but can I get by with it ? Thanks

From the old connector I pulled out the rubber piece inside of connector (pictured) and now it clicks on / seated. Any ideas on what is wrong? Thanks

That's the seal out of the plug & socket, without that you will have corrosion issues with it.

Maybe take a straight blade or exacto knife and trim the seal down ‘a little bit’ - also : Napa usually has a good assortment of connectors and such. It may be that this one swelled up too much from being exposed to oil, etc.
