What's the secret to keeping it going so long?
Keeping up with the services like oil changes and transmission fluid & filter changes, for sure. Never letting it overheat and thus be more likely to drop valve seats. Speaking as the owner of an 08 KK with 228,000 miles. Also, just fixing little things when they break, so that it continues to be a fun vehicle to drive. I'm a big fan of low mileage Mopar parts from the junkyard for non-powertrain part replacements.

I just worked off and 08 Liberty Limited with 204k on it and using it as a work vehicle atm. I noticed that in tow/haul mode, it has different shifting points, which seems to help with the weight. I was planning on changing the oil and gasket as well as trans fluid. I see it's a sealed trans and has no filter i guess, idk, Is their a drain and fill?

It’s a normal 42RLE with VLP (variable line pressure), same as on the KJ’s. It just has a cap instead of a dipstick.

Could one plumb in a filter on the return line from the trans cooler? This is something I do to all my fluid power systems.

The transmission has a filter inside the pan, because it’s a regular old transmission despite the “dealer service only” note on the fill cap. You can do a fluid and filter service on it by dropping the pan.

Yes, but the pan filter is more like a window screen. Inline filters are much more effective and easier to service
