I just replaced the muffler and tailpipe on my son's 2003 Liberty and was wondering about the torque listed in the service manual. They state 21 ft lbs for the nuts (M10-1.5). I thought that was excessive, as a matter of fact, the converter flange almost touches the muffler flange at even 15 ft lbs. I never got my torque wrench to click at 21 ft lbs, I backed the nuts off and retorqued to 15 ft lbs.
Is this normal to have the flange 'bow' like this? The muffler had been replaced before, and there were no springs between the flanges like the ones at the manifold. I wondered if the torque was based on some spring between the flanges? The old one had just nuts on the studs, the oem locking nuts. Thanks!
