Will a 2004 be a direct drop in for a 2006? I know older are not. I found 2 different 04s, but do not want to get them, if there will be a ton of extra things to do, to get them to work. What years are "correct"? Thanks

Pretty sure you would need an 05 or newer, up to 2012 even... the reluctor rings are different, sensors need swapping as you'll have a different PCM system too..

There are a bunch of good engine swap threads already on here, that have been to the top recently... dig a little, and you'll find what you need to know. Question has been asked and answered about 4 times in as many months, so the good engine swap threads have been referenced quite a bit.

EDIT: to say that the 2004, heck, even a 2002 engine CAN WORK... you would just need to re-use a lot of parts from your original engine; basically do a tear-down of both and rebuild of the good one.

I've seen threads talking about the 02 and 03s, but nont any that said whn the reluctor change happened. I have to pay someone to do this swap, so trying to make it as easy as possible, to avoid extra expenses. If you swap the ****** too, does the reluctor issue still apply?

Your best bet then is going to be to get an 05 or newer engine... whomever you are paying to do the work is NOT going to want to do a teardown of two engines, swap parts, and reassemble the donor. Well, they probably will do it, but they'll be charging you accordingly, and it's a lot of time. So $$$$$.

Swapping the transmission does not factor in at all. The reluctor ring is attached to the crankshaft, inside the engine block.

To be safe I'd aim for a 2005 and up 3.7 engine. You can even use a 2012 liberty engine just a few sensors to swap and the oil filter adapter is different, I just use the filter for the year engine I bought instead.

The computer 2002-03-04 was different from the later years so the reluctors inside the engine the camshaft and crankshaft sensors read to time the motor are different.

Technically you can use any year 3.7 if you willing to do the work to convert it. Some folks here have a 2012 motor in a 2002-03 KJ. Great write ups in the subject

Thanks to the advice here I put a low mileage 2012 Liberty in our 2006 commander. Simple swap of the sensors that are different.
Only confusing thing is EGR and non EGR. If like me you are non EGR don't worry about it, just use your original exhaust manifold, it blocks the exhaust gas from going to the EGR valve.

If I were you I would get a 2007 engine as that appears to be the best year in terms of power, torque, and an increased compression ratio. and also an improved can profile.

So, just bought an 2006 motor for my 2006 Jeep Liberty. It's not the same color Jeep, so hope it works!<LOL> Has 1/2 the miles.. hoping it lasts a long long long time. Warranty is only 90 days.

Check what you need to get your warranty. Some places require certain things be changed, some obvious like oil filter, water pump, gaskets, stuff like that.

Really picky places want certified mechanics to do the instigation.

Most of the caveats are to protect the salvage yards from idiots who'd run a new motor with no oil. But some yards are unscrupulous.
