So my poor ol' Jeep has been sitting in my garage for the last couple months, unregistered, and in need of a new torque convertor and transmission. I recently acquired a two-wheeled replacement to take over DD duties so that has relegated the KJ to a off-road / hunting / fun / toy vehicle. So, I'm not in a huge hurry and plan on undertaking this endeavor solo as much as possible. I have never dropped a trans prior to this, but that hasn't stopped me from fixing / replacing all the other things on my Libby, so I'm not going to start now.

Plan of action is this:
-Replace trans with junkyard unit (hopefully low miles, fingers crossed)
-New torque convertor (not from China)
-New shocks and coils in the rear
-Need to replace ball joint on rear boomerang
-Need to change spark plugs
-Need to flush coolant system
-Need to fix front passenger window regulator

Most of that list is easy, but I'm creating this thread more for transmission related questions and feedback. My Jeep is a '06 Renegade 4x4 auto. There seems to be some variation between available 42rle transmissions. I am under the impression I have a two plug model.

Anyone know of a good source for a replacement? I have been tracking local inventory and haven't had much luck. Just a place in Yuma, AZ that doesn't ship. Also any input for a torque convertor?

This is pretty much the start of my project now that the busy holiday season of 6 day 66 hour work weeks are winding down. Any advice on what else I should replace are welcome. Also any links to trans replacement how-to's and guides would be a godsend. Curious as to any prep or preventative maintenece that would apply to the replacement trans as well. Seals, bearings, other things that need to be addressed? I plan on scouring the internet for all this early stage info, but figured I'd throw this out here first.

A preemptive thank you and sorry for the long rambling. Happy New year too!

^^^^^^I hope you do. I was visiting in Mesa early in December 2015 and wanted a short off road trip in a KJ out there and couldn't get any takers.

question: why replace the trans instead of finding a good and reputable shop to rebuild it? or even better... rebuild it yourself?

Cost. Called a few places and just to diagnose what would need to be done costs almost as much as a junkyard trans. I have not looked into rebuilding it myself; from what I understand it is complex and requires special tools. Plan on going with the path of least resistance. Fingers crossed there!

Also, I just don't like shops. If they screw up they never want to take ownership of the issue. If I screw up I have to. :D

I would not even think about having a transmission rebuilt, I would have always opt to have my transmission re manufactured. The difference is that a re manufactured transmission has upgraded parts added to it and a rebuilt one does not.

I have to admire someone who has never dropped a trans, yet still wants to attempt replacement at home. Quality jack stands and safety is paramount.
Do you have air tools at home Zanzabar? This would be extremely helpful with rusty bolts.
Do you have the 2006 pdf factory service manual to begin with?

A complete remanufactured ****** (either version) Including torque converter from OReillys can be had for $1,700. with a 3 year warranty and labor compensation should it require replacement.

Well, I have replaced just about everything but the motor, trans, and transfer case at this point, so I should be alright. :D
I do have the FSM and tools are covered. Hopefully rust shouldn't be to big of an issue; Jeep has lived its whole life in AZ.

My name still shows up as Zanazabar? I forgot I put that on there years ago. Lol

Yeah I looked at re-mans but they cost to much. If I needed my Jeep to get me to work and whatnot I'd drop the cash. Trying to keep everything under $1000.

Nice! I forgot about her thread. Thanks.

I'd never replaced a trans before. Did it in the yard with jack stands and a cheap harbor freight ****** jack. I took my time, fixed/replaced other things while I was under there.

With everything else, I spent about $1000 in total.
