need to improve mpg!!! i average 13.8 mpg

gas has skyrocketed in recent weeks, it was $3.80 3 weeks ago. now its $4.10, wtf is going on and dont you dare tell me they are switching the blend, that doesnt result in a more than 30 cent jump per gallon in a matter of weeks.

anyway i would like ti improve my mpg, evic says my average is 13.8 and since im pretty new to how cars and trucks work, i am kinda lost on what to do. only thing ive heard that could help would be to get a better air intake

i drive alot between school and work. i usually go over the speed limit usually 5-10 over. jeep had a tune up month ago. tire pressure on evic says right front and left rear are 25 which is weird since i just filled them up to high 30s. i think im just gonna use the manual tire gauge to check the pressure, sensors might be loose or broken. the other tires are high 30s as well.

ill clean the filter tomorrow but even if its clean the mpg should go up that much, there must be other factors

yes they are switching the blend, i have given up on fuel economy, the us government requires that all gas have a minimum of 10% ethanol content, and idgaf who anyone talks too ethanol is the worst thing you can try to burn in your engine, not only is it bad for components but by volume it yields less energy than gasoline, in other words in order to get the same power out of an engine that runs on gas the same engine burning ethanol would have to burn almost 2 times the amount of fuel. the fuel additives going into gas at terminals and refineries does play a major role, stick to good quality gas, the only companys i purchase from are exxonmobil and chevron, are there other decent gas stations? yes. but i reccommend those 2. and now companies will be forced by regulation to up the ethanol content to 15%. the best thing you can do is take care of your engine with good quality fluids, most people talk about oil and antifreeze and overlook fuel as a fluid. as far as off the shelf additives here are the good ones: chevron techron super concentrate fuel system cleaner, BG 44K fuel system cleaner (not available in stores but most dealerships will sell it to you as a part), BG MOA (motor oil additive), lucas upper cylinder lubricant with injector cleaner (increases fuel lubricity), lucas ethanol safe guard, star tron enzyme, and k-100 additive (those last 3 fight the negative effects of ethanol). let me be perfectly clear though: I AM NOT SAYING THAT ANY OF THESE PRODUCTS WILL MAGICALLY INCREASE YOUR FUEL MILEAGE. THEY ARE NOT SNAKE OILS. taking care of your jeep is how you will get the best performance out of it, you wouldnt buy a thouroughbred race horse and feed it twinkies would you?

i drive less than 1 mile to go to work everyday, my jeep burns more fuel warming up than it does moving, i average 10mpg

There are a lot of factors to think about when trying to boost your mpg. How much weight you carry, do you have a roof basket or other type or rack, tire pressure, condition of lubricating fluids, clean injectors and system, spark plug gap. All of these things, and more, put together can give you a nice gain in mpg. Nothing thats going to blow your mind but with the ever rising price of go juice every little bit helps. No one thing will make any significant difference, its all about maintenance and also driving technique. Get your right foot on a diet and keep up with the maintenance and youll get the most out of you jeep. Or any other vehicle for that matter.

see post # 6, in my particular case there isnt much i can do differently to change my fuel economy, i already take care of my jeep with the best quality parts i can afford (including consumables such as lubricants, oils, brakes, tires etc...) but the fact remains that i drive less than 1 mile (thats not a typo, i mean 1 as in one) to go to work and if i get up to 35 MPH that would be fast, i do carry a decent amount of weight, but even unloaded my mileage doesnt change that much but i didnt buy a jeep for fuel mileage and i feel sorry for anyone who did.

13.8 is pretty normal when I drive like an ass. And I still have yet to do spark plugs. And stop filling your tires to high 30's in PSI before it gets warm and they burst on you. Keep them down to between 30-35.

Oh and stop driving like an ass and MAYBE you'll see 14-15mpgs, since you're doing town driving.

Town driving is the key here. Alot of stop sign/lights? I drive 15 miles one way to work, half city half highway and with the added around town driving i get about 220 miles to a tank if i ride her till the light comes on. Did the math a while ago and i think it was in the 16/17mpg ball park. Thats with 3.5" of lift, fully loaded in the back and cross bars on the roof. I think your problem is the short low speed around town driving, not much you can do about that.

also if just running around town and under 50 or so keep the OD off
that way the trans is not always shifting back and forth as much

south jersey? i thought you have chevrons down there....i know you have exxon, but yes sunoco is decent.
here is my rating of fuel companies
1. chevron and exxonmobil are tied
2.sunoco
3.hess
anything else i would not willingly purchase

not trying to be a dick, but why drive if you work so close? lol...

to be completely honest its cold as fudge outside in the am right now, and i do some travel for work, once its summer time ill be gettin my a$$ up earlier and doing a 3 mile run every morning to go to work or doing a run and riding my bike in. not to mention how could i resist the urge to drive my jeep?

I never have trouble with this. Everyone says OD likes to shift in and out. My TCM likes to keep the torque converter unlocked between 40 and 50, then locking when I get a little faster. It never downshifts out of O/D.

hehehe i was on interstate today i was doing 85 and people were still passing me, coldnt believe it they had to be doing at least 95

I get the same. but i'm totally stock, no lift, no basket, no nothing. same as the day she rolled off the lot. i was getting about 190 per tank before i did the rear diff fluid, a few oil changes and the plugs, air filter, iac and tps and ran some seafoam through the tank and engine.

it's gone down a bit now because the wife needs it "warmed up" before work but still pulling 200 miles per tank even with that.
