I drove a Patriot last year while waiting for my ball-joint recall work to be done. I thought it drove and rode pretty well. It seemed more car-like than Jeepy, but I'd love to see one with a little more height, and meaty tires

Rented one (Patriot) in Philly while I was back east and put over 3700 miles on it from NE Maine to central Florida. I much prefer my 03 Liberty but, it is not a bad rig. The 4 cyl ran well getting over 31mg with almost all highway driving. The Autostick option on the CVT was a lot of fun also. I would have serious doubts about taking it off road. This one had Goodyear Eagles of some kind on it and I would not even call them "some" terrain tires. There is ample room for gear and back seat folk, but I found the drivers side legroom lacking, and it felt like I was sitting down in a box . For someone that wanted good mpg and room for kids and stuff and the availability of an allwheel drive setup, it was not bad. Doubt it would do be well up here even if it had a trailer hitch on it. Didn't even look under for any sort of skids. Thrifty does not appreciate you taking their rigs off road it seems.

Some would, and do say that a Liberty has no power.

That is subjective.

The CVT requires a "different" method of driving to get power out of the engine. That is the main issue. It's something to get used to.

The Liberty does have good power when on the freeway and passing cars. Low end power leaves much to be desired, especially after getting the XK.

If you plan to buy a Patriot or Compass for a wheeler then don't waste your money. Especially wince you already have a YJ. If you want an economical 4WD DD that you can mod a bit then get a Patriot.

right I understand that..I wouldn't buy one to make a ******** wheeler, maybe just the once in a great moon trip to local place but for the most part it would be a daily on the street..

Some recent things have happened that have made me consider getting one of these or a KK..one my truck has been having issues and two we are trying to start a family. I bought the truck to tow my YJ 3 hours away to a fun spot (the badlands off road park) which I haven't done since I bought it. for one I don't have a trailer and with work I just haven't had time.. the truck is also a daily driver with no back seat to put a car seat when that time comes. the price of a newer truck with decently low miles the options I want around here is something I can't afford. An 08 KK or MK (think thats the patriot) is in my price range, I'm not talking a top of the line best model but one with power windows, power door locks, cd player, etc is in the budget.

If you use the autostick function and keep it in the power band, the little 4 ****** is very responsive, and winds up like a bandit. Using pure auto mode, it took some getting used to, but one bup of the stick and you can go up or down and really enjoy the ride.

Dudes, forget not that these are Calibers, and are meant as price leaders that can improve Jeep's CAFE. As that they do well. As jeeps...well...it is telling the (IIRC) over 80% are FWD like their dodge daddy and do not have even that trashy AWD system. ( the "low range" is a computer program designed to simulate low range, not a gear reduction...:freak3:)

Lift, tires, off roading? Good luck with that. The only guy I remember on LOST who even tried it has disappeared.

I will agree that, like the Liberty, it is a class leader in off-road ability. :freak3: I would love to see a head to head with the Forester or Impreza, though. And as for reliablity.... The Caliber hasn't been very good if you keep them ON road.

Somewhere on here or LOST you can find a post where someone got their mom a Patriot because her Compass was such a POS..

Next time someone is at an off-road park be sure to snap a picture of one of the twins off-roading.

took the plunge and am now an owner of a new MK. I must say that is enough for the city, and will take my turn to test drive it somewhere that will test what it can do.
