With the typical jeep liberty owner..(young Ill-knowledged girl). Tried to say $226 to install the rear speed sensor.. I've done it before took maybe 3 min. Literally involves one bolt. I said ugh no thanks how much for just the sensor? $37. Then they had the balls to want $402 to do a "4wd service" which is drain and refill both diffs and xfer case.. Ya ugh no thanks.. And after that they want to tell me that it's not supposed to have a lift on and not supposed to have bigger tires. I replied ok guy. Thank you for your time and advice.. I left slightly offended.

Regarding the lift and tires, I would have said ..
I don't like getting stuck, and I only did what was necessary for real off roading...the way it should have come from the factory and left.

If if chose my nick, as most know, is precisely because I began to feel 'ri..ed off'... DIY is nice too. (well, not always...)
In fact, I began to realize something was wrong as I had to pay an illogically high amount just for changing the belt.

But, said that, and by no means trying to be on the stealeships' side ( oops, did I say stealer...) one should also keep in mind
the HUGE amount of costs involved in running ANY business nowadays ( rent,taxes,lawyer,accountant as so on...).
It's not like doing the same thing in one's own garage and, maybe, 'under the table...' if there's any money involved.

Don't want to justify the rip off, nor do I mean that at the dealership they are poor guys in need of charity, just trying to
consider all aspects of the issue.

BTW, No, I don't work at a stealership nor do I own one.... ( ain't rich either..).

But these are just my thoughts guys, just saying... as usual.

right ha. then they want to get lippy with me because the mechanic had already put on the new sensor. I said ok well I never asked you to do that. I will pay for the part and put it on myself. He was ******** that he did free work. In my head I'm thinking is this guy serious? #1 I never asked for that.. I sent it in for a "free diagnostic check" #2 It MIGHT have taken ten minutes MAXIMUM out of his day to do that.. I said take it off if you want to but I'm not paying ridiculous "rip off" labor charges for something I didn't ask for and can do myself for free. and #3 they never even called me to tell me they finished. I called ten times this morning no answer from any of them. Had to go down there and hunt my truck down.. The service rep and the mechanic both gave me lip for it.. go back to ripping off old helpless ladies ****** bags. I'll take my truck to honest people.

Don't expect any shop rates to go down,it will be raising shyhigh very soon.The prices of the equiptment needed to work on these newer vehicles is a eye-opener when you got to buy all new tools every year to keep up.

Heck just being a tech is getting harder as we are responsible for our own tools.Not only do we have to amke enough to pay our normal bills but also to pay the weekly tool payment,sometime multiple payments to 2-3 tool trucks a week.

Don't expect any shop rates to go down,it will be raising shyhigh very soon.The prices of the equiptment needed to work on these newer vehicles is a eye-opener when you got to buy all new tools every year to keep up.

I have to say that some dealers are reasonable both in special pricing ie: 4WD service all lube oil for lets say $199 (except ******) and in the the way they talk/deal reasonably to customers. Luckily I have a good dealer near me.
They know how to bring in customers and keep them.

If you work on this type of stuff long enough you thank god when it takes only 10mins as that one day you get that one that ends up taking 60mins or longer.

I had one on a RAM pickup that the sensor came apart and wound itself all around the carrier,took about 2 hours to get it all cleaned up just to put a new sensor in.

Every shop uses flat rate labor charges besides small services like oil changes.That way when you go to a shop in Cali the hour rate for that same job is the same as in Maine,just the local labor rate is different but you still pay for the same amount of time.

Yupp as TJKJ knows that most people don't know is that all shops have programs on the comp. that show each jobs designated labor time. Now the techs that work on it could get it done in that time, half that time or longer then the time (which is rare) and they still get paid for that designated labor rate. Thats how techs and service guys can make 60 hours worth of pay while only working 40-50 hours.

Me, as a simple DIYer ( quite 'jerky' too ), had to fork out say 2,000 $ ( I'm not through yet..).

Couple scanners, a couple of ratchets, some keys, a very limited set anyway. Don't want to think what's like being a pro.

But yes, I know there'll always be some guys trying to make a fortune out of You, particularly if they think one can't tell
a wrench from a screwdriver...

Yeah I've got over $50,000 in tools now and sadly I'll be forced to buy at least $10,000 more in the next year or so just to keep up with what is being put out in the market.The good thing is as a tech in a independant shop I get 2-3 years to get the specialized tools after the vehicle has come out due to they are still under warranty and in that 2-3 years the price of those tools have gone down by 50%-75%.The bad thing is I have to have all the tools for all makes and models which becomes very pricey as I work on anything from a '02 KJ to a '76 911.

What really bugs me is that the shops here charge $100 per hour and they pay the mechanics maybe $30. I would like to see the man doing the work make more than that.
