wheel stud/ lug nut disaster.

hey guys, wow, what a mess my beatiful alloy wheel is after the day i had with it.
Started out to be a good day, F1 on tv,some coffee, and then plans for stepdad and I
to finally install my OME/bilsteiner lift.
The only thing that went right was our decision to do the rear first.i will tell you why.
while rotating the tires a while back,having only factory tire iron(a friend had my breaker bar) i got 3 done and on the left rear came to a nut that was waaay tight.( previous rotation was a freebee done with oil change.bad move.)so I dont get the factory wrench on all the way and i twist the hex on the nut.
so i tell step dad and we try to use a smaller socket hammered on only to keep falling off.
the hex at the base of the nut doesnt line up with hex at the end of the nut.so he suggests we get the air hammer and chisel the nut off, ok , i say, but my wheel will be ok right?
so we tape up all around the hole and he goes at it. after an hour we are left with pretty much all the nut gone EXCEPT FOR THE TAPER BIT THAT WE CANT REACH with the chisel and my wheel is DESTROYED.
i ran over to crappy tire to get strut tool and when i came back i almost freaked when i saw it, as he was chiseling, the 'bounce' of the air chisel left marks all around the lug hole and we are no further than we started. now, my stepdads(a young) 72, and i know he was just trying to help, but my WHEEL, UUGGGHHH.....

I know i should have a picture, i will do tomorrow after work, so u can actually see what i m talking about, long day today, after that abortion this morn. had a communion to attend.

i think i will have to drill the stud out, start small and work my way up to a 3/8" bit, do you think that will work ?
I think i will need cobalt bits,they are stronger than titanium .

Or if any one else has any words of wisdom PLEEAASSE, chime in.

until i resolve this, i guess my lift stays in the garage, man, been there 6 weeks already, i feel like a kid with a new toy that i cant play with, its killing me, money in bank for tires, lift kit in garage, whats next, a flat tire on that wheel,then i will be screwed.
Hopefully t i can drill it, gonna buy a set of bits tomorrow on lunch, will post pics of damage and check in here after work before i attempt.

ok, i could be wrong.
but
if you have the wheel off and you want to get the stud out of the hub you should be able to just pound the stud out. or press it out on a press.

this might be something best done at a garage.. a good garage shouldnt charge that much to replace a stud. to drive to town with 4 lugs intead of 5 wont be bad ..

Should have pulled the chrome cap off the lugnut,it does come off and rather easy,then used a 18mm socket to remove the lugnut.

thats what i thought the plan was, pull the cap to expose the nut, i have a lug on my RF that is like that.actually that is what twisted in the first place , just the end that doesnt have the nut underneath, alot of people dont realize the actual nut is only half the size of the whole thing that you can see.

ok heres some pics, i started drilling the stud out this morning, need some bigger bits, biggest i have is 1/4".

i have shots of my RF that has a nut without the decorative stainless cap, this is what i thought we would do to LR but have a look at the butcher job on it.

time to invest in a stripped bolt/nut extractor socket set

had a similar problem with a friends alloys, but there was enough room to weld a new nut to the existing busted lug nut

swap the rim with the spare rim and stick a LED spare tire brake light in the torn up hole to conceal the damage from onlookers :)

You'd have done less damage with explosives.

Amateur time schedule for working on cars:

FSM says 40 minutes to replace part 'X'.

Amatuer Schedule:

Stare at part to decide if it's something you can tackle: 45 minutes
Call friend to ask if he's ever done one before: 30 minutes
Wait for friend to come over: 45 minutes
When friend arrives, ask if he's eaten, when he responds "no", get lunch at local drive-thru: 25 minutes.
Arrive home, get out tools: 15-25 minutes
Realize you are out of beer, make beer run: 20 Minutes.
Stare at part with friend while drinking first beer: 15 minutes
Begin removal process, find that one bolt won't come free: 15 minutes
Discover special fastener you don't have tool for. Run to AutoZone: 25 minutes
Realize Autozone ***** and doesn't have tool, admit to yourself you should have gone to NAPA: 25 minutes
Remove special fasteners: 10 minutes
Remove part: 2-5 minutes
Struggle with new part before you realize new part isn't exactly the same: 45 minutes
Drive part back to NAPA (You learned the first time) and get replacement part: 10 minute trip.
Stand and wait for parts guy at NAPA to pull correct part (He grabbed the "option group B" part first time): 15 minutes.
Drive home from NAPA: 10 minutes.
PUt special fasteners on: 45 minutes (You lost one in the driveway and you can't find it)
Replace bolts: 45 minutes (you can't find torque specifications so your friend is inside browsing **** on your computer (claiming he's looking for torque specifications) while you wait outside talking to the neighbor)
Go back in to get proper torque specifications because your friend got the pinko ****** european specifications in NM instead of foot lbs and your cheap torque wrench doesn't have those: 5 minutes
Torque bolts down: 5 minutes.
Try to turn engine over: 30 minutes.
Attempt to figure out why replacing part hasn't fixed problem: 2 hours
Call AAA and tow to garage: 15 minutes.

yah , ok, u guys are all comedians, thanks.u all sound like the guys at work.
Im sure it wil buff out too.lol.
the wheel hole is fine (so far) , just looks like shit.
oh well. u live , u learn. think i will use it as a (covered) spare.
