Has anyone else's Jeep started itself? Bizarre.

I'm going to go check my truck to see if it works with multiple presses of the lock button on the fob.

I got to this one late...

But I have the same remote starter in my Jeep. They are called "add-on" starters. You tie them into the existing wiring and the "door lock pulse" is what triggers the starter.

On mine, I push the "lock" button on my key fob twice in quick succession and it starts. You can set the run time to 10 or 15 minutes with internal switches in the starter box. Once it hits the run time limit, it shuts off.

You can get this type of starter on eBay for like, $20. It took me about an hour to install. You probably have one tucked away somewhere. If you don't like it, look for the safety "on/off" switch under the dash somewhere. All starters come with them. Mine is a chrome toggle switch. If you turn off the switch, the starter will be inoperable and your key fob will no longer start the Jeep.

links please, I just got my keyless entry working today, had to buy a remote from the dealer and get it programmed- and I'd love to have the remote start function lol

Pretty sure starting by itself is the whole point of the electric starter that became an Automotive standard back in the '30s :D

Thanks to everyone who lended their time and insight -- especially Prospect62.

I poked around under the steering column and, lo and behold, I found an auto-starter (Audiovox AS-9075a). You'd think the dealer would have mentioned this when trying to sell me the car...nope.

Anyway, one mystery is solved, but it raises another: I don't know which button, combination of buttons, or proper sequence to press them in to use the darn thing.

I tried pressing the "lock" button quickly from 2 to 10 times, but it didn't start the car.

I also found and downloaded the user manual, but it only says that one has to, "check with the installing dealer" for this info.

Man, it would be nice to get this working. It's been a bad winter here in New Jersey and my wife would appreciate getting into a warm car.

Maybe we should give the key back to our 19 month old and let her figure it out.

Again, thanks to everyone who helped out.

Yeah those are the ones. Specifically this one looks the most similar:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Audiovox-AS9075...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2a052fd701

Although mine is a "DEI" brand starter, it looks exactly like the Audiovox one in that link. I distinctly remember paying under $30 for mine shipped, though. It may have been on "clearance" or something.

Hell, for $30 and an hour or two of your time, you're coming out ahead. My local car shops want $150 to install a remote starter (although they are nicer units I'm sure). I know it looks like alot of wires, but it's really not a tough install if you do one wire at a time and take your time.

But I wanted to retain my factory key fob and not pay an arm and a leg, so this was a great solution.

Glad to help cbetter.

I didn't realize the KJ I just bought came with a remote starter until about 2 days after purchase. I friend took a look at my keychain and told me..."that might be a starter" I thought it was just a compustar communication system.

Little did I know, it was a starter. Love it.

I called the dealership where the 1st owner purchased the car. One of the techs told me their usual sequence is: lock, unlock, lock. I tried it and it worked! I must say, it's a little freaky the first time your car starts up with nobody inside it.

Thought this happened with a Jeep, not a car?

Pro tip here - The only people on this forum that have constant problems out of their Jeep are the ones that call it a car.

x2. :p

I called my jeep a car once and the engine blew up....no lie.

Yup, had nothing to do with the low oil level nor the resistance to go buy $10 worth of oil to keep it running :-({|= :^o

Theeeeere's that critical piece of missing data. Glad you figured it out. So now that you know it's there, you gonna use it?

1997 Jeep Cherokee Started Itself

I have been looking for anyone else this has happened to. Last night my Daughters 97' Cherokee had a dead battery. I hooked up my Roll Around charger to it, on 12V high for 1 hour. Then I set it to 6V/12V low and left it on the rest of the night. This morning I remembered I had not turned the charger off and was worried about leaving it on too long, so I went home to disconnect it.
I pulled into the garage and as I walked out to the driveway to disconnect the charger, I heard the Jeep running. There was no key in the ignition and no one had been home since 6am and it was now 9:30am.
This Jeep has no remote starter installed whatsoever, and it does not have keyless access either.
Could the battery charger somehow shorted/overloaded a relay for the ignition?
Also, the shift lever PARK switch is going bad and you have to push forward on the shifter to get the Jeep to start. ?????

This is going to sound crazy. Wondering if anyone else has experienced their Jeep starting itself -- without an auto-starting system installed!

Wife drove the 2005 Liberty Limited home last night, shut it off, took the key out, got out, locked the door.

Baby was whining to hold the keys, so my wife obliged.

Baby started pressing the buttons on the factory key (lock, unlock, etc.) as she always does....and the Jeep started up again.

Wife got back in, tried all manner of shutting it off (putting key back in the ignition, turning forward and back, turning the wheel, locking/unlocking doors again, etc.) to no avail.

On my advice, she just left it running until I could get home, but after walking the dog around the block, the Jeep shut itself off.

We bought this 05 Jeep Liberty Limited in 06, and to my knowledge, the first owner did NOT have an auto-starter installed. And as stated before, we only have the factory keyset.

Has anyone else heard of this bizarre behavior? Could the baby have pressed some combination of buttons on the key that started the car, or is there something else at play here?

By the way, my wife assures me the car was completely OFF before she got out.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

No way dude, it's way worse.
Girlfriends don't always cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars when you do that. They just get mad at you.

I would not totaly agree with that for a Guy I work with called his GF and soon to be wife by the wrong name and she thought he was cheating on her and the next time he left home she took a sledge hammer to his Harley.

Lets just say they are no longer engaged.
