i was backing into my garage today had the wheel all the way to the left, and the engine just shut off, oil light came on, i restarted got it parked, and checked the oil, the level was fine, any ideas what could have happened, its the first time this has happened. I did think that i noticed a burning smell last night when i parked it, but i didnt notice it today.

I take it you have a '07 KJ?

Did you hold the wheel at full lock for more then 5 seconds? You should never hold the steering wheel at full lock for more then 5 seconds max, great way to kill the pump and it can kill the engine. If you do have a '07 you do not a throttle cable so the "throttle by wire" could be at fault when it should have raised the engine rpm's for the added PS pressure.

Oh and when the engine is turned off(or dies) with the ignition still on the oil light will turn on,normal. But when the engine is restarted the oil light should not be on.

Troy I've heard you say that about not turning at full lock before. What is the deal with that? I'm not arguing, just wanting to be enlightened. Would love to know the ins and out with whats going on there.

I always thought the hiss at full lock was fluid going over a relief or something. I usually back it off slightly upon hearing that because it just doesn't sound very pleasant...

At full lock the PS pump is at max pressure with nowhere to send it making the relief valve open and causes extreme heat in the fluid. After time it kills the pump, steering gear, hoses, and serp belt.

To the OP................
Sounds like a carbon issue in the IAC,time to get a induction cleaning and see if that works.

06 has a throttle cable. Doesn't the IAC bring up the engine speed for the PS pressure? As for the PS, (feel free to correct me if I am wrong) the pressure builds up because there is no place for the fluid to go and the failure comes from the fluid heating up. I believe it foams up the fluid too. Maybe the OP's belt is slipping?

Ah. I thought it was a relief, but I never figured that would be a big deal before. I guess since there is so little fluid in the reservoir that it would heat up fast. Often relief valves are used in hydraulics as circuit logic, but the amount of fluid is much larger. Didn't think of that.

All that stuff breaking sounds like it might be a little bit of trouble huh...thanks for the reply.

Yeah the '06 has a throttle cable still.I believe in '04 they deleted the PS pressure sensor in the high pressure line that told the PCM that it needed to increase the rpm's so those without the PS pressure sensor have a larger lag time before the PCM can increase the rpm's.It the PS pump is killing the engine without any codes the IAC could be carboned up some.Either that or the pump is on it's way out, releif valve going bad(not opening all the way).
