Transferring OCM/Airbag Hardware

It looks as though it may be incredibly easy to transfer over the Occupant Classification Module (OCM), weight bladder and sensor, and other hoorah from the 05 manual seat to the 02 pwr/htd seat on the passenger.

Looking thru both service manuals, exploded parts drawings, and comparing part numbers, it appears that except for the addition of "bedsprings" and the metal bracket for the OCM, the seat cushion frame on the 05 manual seat is identical to the seat cushion frame on the 02 power seat.

It may be a simple as removing the seat cushion and frame from the 05 seat, with the OCM and all it's associated hardware still intact, then removing the 05 cushion and cover, installing the 02 leather cover and cushion on the 05 cushion frame, then installing this hybrid cushion assembly on the 02 power seat. I'm going to leave the 05 10 pin black connector, with the 3 wires for the OCM, as is and route the wires for the 02 seat power and heat separately - I don't want to tempt fate any more than necessary.;)

One other item - the 05 DOES NOT have a seatbelt switch in the seatbelt buckle on the passenger seat - it uses a tension sensor that is in the anchor buckle on the outboard side of the seat, and is connected into the OCM module. The seatbelt switch on an 02 or 03 passenger seat shouldn't be connected to anything in an 05, and you have to use the 05 passenger seatbelt, with the tension sensor connected to the OCM, for the OCM and passenger airbag to work correctly.

I'm also currently doing the same upgrade to my 05 sport.

Took me for ever trying to fit that circuit breaker in place. (if you have a set of small hands around the house they will come quite handy in this case)

Gave up trying to see where it goes lied on my back and started searching with my fingers until finally, CLICK!! success!!!

Fantastic photo Blue! Very helpfull. Thanks alot!!

Have you by any chance figured that color codes out? I just started and run into this:

The the black one is attached to my '05 harness and the gray came with the
02' seats.
One has 5 cables the other 4 and still need to figure out which goes where.
Any help will be deeply apreciated.

EDIT: this helped a bit
http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33549

I ended up using the connector from the 05 seat with the wires form the 02 seat.

You will need a really fine tool in order to hack the '02 4 pin male connector. I used a 1mm allen.
Unless you take the red cap off, you will not be able to remove the pins.

I tracked back the wires to find out which 2 were for the seatbelt senssor.
It turned out Gray and Purple.

According to the FSM black/white is usually used for ground,
so this leaves the pink/green for power.

This is the '05 connector. The 2 green wires are hooked up to the seatbelt senssor Pins 2 and 4 if I'm not mistaken.

I noticed that the pins don't match up with the pins on the connector comming from the carpet:confused:
so that means that the senssor is not live?
"Nice job" I thought  and then remembered what you said

One other item - the 05 DOES NOT have a seatbelt switch in the seatbelt buckle on the passenger seat - it uses a tension sensor that is in the anchor buckle on the outboard side of the seat, and is connected into the OCM module. This is the finished product

Holding the connector with the red locking pin up and counting from left to right, top row has pins 1-5 and bottom row 6-10

Pin 1 : Power
Pin 2 : Seat belt senssor
Pin 4 : Seat belt senssor
Pin 8 : Ground

This is what I did, tested and found out works.

If You Don't Have Factory Wiring...

In my case, even though I had power wired to the slot for the circuit breaker (on an '05, they call it # 3, even though it's the same slot as # 1 on earlier years), and someone at the factory had actually installed fuse # 30 for seat heat, there was no wiring installed in the C 2 connector on the back of the junction block.

If you look under the dash at the juction block, there's three 42 pin connectors hooked to it. C 1 is the one on the bottom, C 2 is the one in the corner above C 1, and C 3 is forward of C2 (right beside the circuit breaker slots).

If you pull C 2 out of it's slot and look at the face of the connector, pin 1 is the extreme upper left hand large pin, and pin 42 is the extreme lower right hand large pin. Pin 1 should have the 16 gauge pink/light blue wire from the circuit breaker to power the seat motors. Pin 42 should have a 16 gauge red wire from fuse 30 to supply power to the seat heater control module.

If when you look at C 2 you don't see any terrninals installed in the female half for pins 1 and 42, guess what - you don't have the wiring installed for seat power and heat. You're going to have to run your own.

Fortunately, the circuit breakers they use, use the same form factor (ie, blades and slots) as an ATC/ATO size fuse. I installed a 25 amp ATC fuse instead of a circuit breaker, with a fuse tap blade on the "cold" side of the fuse, connected the wire with a quick disconnect terminal to the fuse tap, and ran it to the seat. I now have seat power from the same point as factory, just not thru connector C 2, and thru a 25 amp fuse instead of a circuit breaker.

Same for the heater control module - I installed a ATM fuse tap at fuse 30, connected and routed the wire in the same way. Note - where on an 02/03 it was fuse 29 that supplied the heater control module, on an 05 it's fuse 30.

NAPA carries fuse tap kits for both ATC/ATO and ATM size fuses - in each kit, you get 3 fuse tap blades, three 14-16 gauge terminals, and three 18-22 gauge terminals. P/N for the ATC size kit is NW 785130, form ATM size NW 785132. Each kit was 5 bucks and change.

The only power source that apparently stayed the same from 02 to 05 is fuse 25, which supplies power to the seat heater switches. Fuse 25 supplies other items as well, so if you're patient enough to locate the wiring running to the other components you can splice off of that instead of having to resort to another fuse tap.

Another note - in an 02 the circuit breaker supplying power to the seat motors was rated at 25 amps. In an 05, they've reduced the size of the breaker to 10 amps. Talk about nickel and dime cost reduction!!! I'll leave it up to you whether you want to consider upgrading the 05 breaker to 25 amps if you already have power seats installed.

Driver's Seat In

Got the driver's seat in and wired up over the weekend - have to do it in stages as this is my only vehicle right now.

Gawd, who'd have thought another seat would make this much difference? This thing is actually a joy to drive now. These 02 seats are a world apart as far as quality and comfort compared to the 05 manual versions. If Daimler had let Chrysler and Jeep maintain this level of quality in their vehicles, instead of telling them "you're not allowed to build a vehicle as good as a MB" and mandating ever-cheaper parts (they tried the same thing at Freightliner where I worked for 12 years), instead of going bankrupt they'd have been laughing in Washington's face at the mention of a takeover.

Delighted it's still relevant. As an aside, I *STILL* havent done my heated seat part. And I probably should since I live in new england and thanks to the XK limited, I now know how nice they are.... KJ is now my daily driver.

I finally managed to get some free time and installed the driver's seat last night!
I can't believe how different the seat feels!!!

The seat it self is the same, but changing the track made quite some difference!
Power seat tracks are a bit more elevated compared to the manual ones.
This gave me a much better view of the front and a way more comfortable ride.

I would highly recommend this mod.

Man I think that the manual seats sit up high enough....The power would kinda make it crappy.....What kinda difference is the 02-04 seats compared to the 05+? Also is it pretty easy to lets say just change the seat and not the base? My moms 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the most comfortable seats in the world, nice and plush and the seats sit nice and low to the podels...

I wanted to do a complete black interior conversion on my 05 but for the time I'm stuck doing little mods that help add some luxury to the ride...EVIC, I need the tow package...I just need to buy a hitch now...etc...But I really didnt want leather Winter time freezes and summer time burns...So I didnt know if the dark slate/black seats could be powered but not heated...

02-04 seats is said to be more comfortable (never used one to hold a personal opinion).
8 bolts keep the seat attached to the track. (3 on each side and 2 at the rear)
The seat frame is the same so you can undo the seats and swap tracks, (This is what I did) or vise versa.

I'm 1.92 m tall and find the new elevated position much more comfortable.
Again this is my personal opinion, based on my experience and my needs.
Find a Liby with power seats and try them out yourself. If you think you don't like 'em don't buy 'em.

Part # for wiring harness between seats?

I have a set of 05 heated power seats I am in the process of putting in my 06 sport CRD. Does anyone know the Jeep part # for the wiring harness that goes from the drivers seat under the console to the passenger seat that controls the heated portion of both seats (10 pin I think). I stopped at my jeep dealer and they were unable to find it on their computer. I don't have the pigtails to make my own harness so a new cable is my only option other than cut off the factory ends and wire it direct from seat to seat, or find one at a junk yard(I live 80 miles from a junk yard that has newer vehicles, so its my option of last resort).

Thanks Loren

First of all I would like to welcome both of you on board.

budson : have a look at the connector under your driver's seat and tell me how many wires run from the harness to the connector. Is it 2 or 4? 2 means you need to run wires 4 you are ok to go

Lab123 : I'll have a look this afternoon and see if I can come up with anything on that pat number.

Both of you should read all earlier posts to get a general idea of what has been done so far.

I just installed a pair of leather power/heated seats into my '05 Liberty Sport. I had no trouble getting the power adjustments working, but I'm really confused on the color coding on the heated seat harnesses. I have a '05 service manual and none of the wire colors on these seats match up to what the manual says they should be. Some other posts on this thread (from '03 and '05 seats) talk about color codes that match up to what my manual says, but the seats I have (which supposedly came out of a '05 Limited) are completely different. The connector styles are correct though. Here are the color codes I have on the seat side connectors. I read the pin numbers off of the connectors:

Driver Side:

Pin 1: tan/orange
Pin 2: green/gray
Pin 3: pink/yellow
Pin 4: gray/pink
Pin 5: red
Pin 6: green/tan
Pin 7: tan/light blue
Pin 8: tan/dark green
Pin 9: tan/white
Pin 10: empty

Passenger side:

Pin 1: empty
Pin 2: green/gray
Pin 3: pink/yellow
Pin 4: gray/pink
Pin 5: empty
Pin 6: green/tan
Pin 7: tan/light blue
Pin 8: tan/dark green
Pin 9: tan/white
Pin 10: empty

All of the colors at the passenger seat match up to a color on the driver seat. I connected all of these matching colors together between the driver and passenger seats. At the driver seat, I also connected +12V to the pink/yellow wire (which is a heavier gauge than the other wires, so I assumed that this is the power feed to the heaters) and to the red wire (I assumed this wire is the power to the heated seat switches). This leaves a tan/orange wire unconnected at the driver side. Should this be grounded? I have nothing connected to ground.

Can anyone identify these wires for me? My guess is that these seats actually came out of a later model year vehicle. Does anyone have wiring diagrams from a '06 or later vehicle?

I have the 06 manual and here is what it says:

Connector 312 (body side) runs over to passenger seat
Connector 314 is the heated seat connector under the passenger seat, the one that connects to the seat, from the body.

Connector 312 feeding to Connector 314
Pin 1 - Blank
Pin 2 - LG/GY - Heated seat temperature sensor signal to Pin 2 on Connector 314
Pin 3 - PK/YL - Passenger Heated Seat Feed to Pin 3 On Connector 314
Pin 4 - GY/PK - Fuse 25 - to Pin 4 on Connector 314
Pin 5 - RD - Fuse 30 - Does not feed to Connector 314
Pin 6 - LG/TN - Passenger Heated Seat Temp. Sensor Ground to Pin 6 on Connector 314
Pin 7 - TN/LB - Right seat heater switch mux to Pin 7 on connector 314
Pin 8 - TN/LB - Right seat low heat LED driver to Pin 8 on connector 314
Pin 9 - TN/WT - Right seat high heat LED driver to Pin 9 on connector 314
Pin 10 - Blank

Ground comes from Connector 311(lt grey plug) on the drivers side pin #4
Ground comes from Connector 313(blk plug) on passenger side pin #8

Edit - Not sure what the Tan/Orange is on yours, does it run to anything on the seat side of the connector?

Eureka! I think this is it! I'm hoping that the repeat of TN/LB in the listing at both Pin 7 and 8 is a typo. Pin 8 should be TN/DG. The main thing I've been missing is +12V to Pin 4 (power feed to heated seat switches). +12V to the heaters themselves goes in on the RD wire at Pin 5 and +12V goes over to the passenger seat heater on the PK/YL wire from Pin 3.

I'll bet that the TN/OR wire corresponds to the useless BR/LB wire that MARIEWASH found on their '03 seats. It's in the same position in the connector (Pin 1) as the TN/OR in the '06. By re-reading MARIEWASH's post a few times I had actually figured this all out, except for the grounding. It looks like all the wires are at the same pin location by function in the '03 and '06 seats, but they changed all the color codes. Also, the '03 seats have a separate ground wire on Pin 10, but the '06 seats are grounded through a splice into the BK/OR wire in the 311/313 connectors. I'll get back under the seats this weekend and I'll post how I make out.

Nope not a typo, in the 06 and 07 they have the same wire color for pin 7 and 8.

I just put in 07 seats in my 07 and sure enough it had both wires the same color.

Hmm. Well, it shouldn't matter. I've got the TN/DG wires tied together between the driver and passenger seats.

These last few posts were the solution to my install. Thanks cdnjeepin!

BTW the TN/OR wire appears to serve no purpose.

leather seats in Uk liberty (known as cherokee here!)

Came across the forum simply by accident but am I glad I did. Superb source of information especially as information relating to the liberty is quite difficult to get over here.
Like previous posts, I have acquired a complete set of (05) leather heated electric seats for my 05 vehicle together with door cards. Fitting electricals is, I guess the same with, after checking, 4 wire plug on the manual driver seat and 2 on the passenger seat. However, in addition to these which can be used for the electric seats, the electric seats have 7 wire plug from the drivers seat and 8 wire from passenger seat (the 8th wire being the RED one). Other coloured leads are matching and would be joined together to complete the respective harness. Being extremely naive, do I need to swop the connecting blocks around so that the block with the RED lead sits under the driver's seat or can I leave in place under the passenger seat (Due to us being RH drive)? Also, do I need to fit a relay unit as shown in another threadpost? I have the relay breaker (25amp) on order.
Thanks
