Anyone have any information on replacing an oil pan on the 3.7L motor? Punched a hole in mine last night, and it was so late and dark, I couldn't get under to check it out. I'm at work now, so that's why I'm asking, and I did a search and no results. The motor is fine, I knew what happened right after I heard the thunk so I got the motor shut off in time.

I did find a couple things online stating that the front axle had to be dropped to complete the job, and I was wondering if anyone could confirm that.

Thanks in advance.

The sad part is I wasn't even out wheeling. I was driving on a 25 foot section of dirt between two roads, only doing about 5 mph, and I drive across this spot every few days. The city has small reflective signs up, and I guess someone took one out, but the brush was covering what was left. If I had actually been out playing around (which I was doing just an hour prior) I wouldn't be so mad as I am right now about this whole thing.

My family owns a motorcycle dealership, and one of our technicians used to work on 4x4's and performance cars. He just recently installed new gears, axles, and lift on my brother's Wrangler just a few weeks ago. He took a look at it and said he thinks he could get it done. So, we'll see after I get the parts in and we can take a closer look.

Oh yeah, here's a picture...

I was just talking to him about it and I found the instructions from the service manual on how to do it. He has his doubts now, lol.

I guess the front diff has to be removed and to do that a good chunk of the left suspension has to be removed so the axle can be removed, which would allow the diff to be pulled out. Then the motor has to be tilted up at the front so the pan can be removed through the front of the vehicle. I may take it to a dealership now...

well maybe ,and that is a huge maybe, the picture is making it look worse than what it really is and you can fix it
no lie
I know a guy who got a good hole in the oil pan of a Trooper ,older body style
same issue ,pull the motor to change the pan
so he welded it ,bent a piece of steel as close to the shape of the pan as he could
and mad a patch
held for a while ,until he rolled it real bad and just trashed the rig

Not sure what year your KJ is, but the 2002 FSM says to remove engine:

" The engine oil pan is made of laminated steel and
has a single plane sealing surface. The sandwich
style oil pan gasket has an integrated windage tray
and steel carrier (Fig. 75). The sealing area of the
gasket is molded with rubber and is designed to be
reused as long as the gasket is not cut, torn or
ripped.

REMOVAL
(1) Remove the engine (Refer to 9 - ENGINE -
REMOVAL).
(2) Position the engine in a suitable engine stand.
NOTE: Do not pry on oil pan or oil pan gasket. Gasket
is integral to engine windage tray and does not
come out with oil pan (Fig. 76).
(3) Remove the oil pan mounting bolts and oil pan.
(4) Unbolt oil pump pickup tube and remove tube.
(5) Remove the oil pan gasket/windage tray
assemblyfrom engine."

^^^^Yeah, I wonder if there is any way to "adjust" that crater and weld a piece of metal over it???

Just thinking.

In a situation like that, it's better to get that pan off and take a look at the crankcase area for small rocks and stuff that might be hiding in there.
