Okay... Ever since my Fiancée bought her 02 KJ we've been hearing a rattling sound coming from the the slide that covers the sun roof. Well today the part that's been rattling decided to come foward and i was able to remove it. It wasn't bolted down or anything. It's just been sitting up there rattling around.

I'm concern if it's something that has to be up there. It has a weather stripping on it but We have never had a leak or anything. We've had some pretty bad storms in the past few weeks so If the sun roof was going to leak it would have by now. Below are some pics... Just click on them to make them bigger. If anyone can tell me what it is, whats it's for and Do i really need it please tell me :)

Thanks in Advance.

I'm not sure right off the bat. I'll have to take a poke around my KJ when I get home tonight after class and see if I can pick out that piece. Unless someone has a FSM close by...

Thanks... I believe it would attach to the back of the sun roof setup some where but that's about it. The sun roof has been working fine with out it... so far.

Cheif,

so sorry... Class ran long so I went home angry, had a "drink" and then went to sleep. I'll check as soon as I get out of work today.

I have to say that looks like a pretty important part of bracing for the sunroof. I'm not sure exactly where it goes, but it sure looks like a support to me.

I just looked at mine. It looks like the piece that goes across the front on mine???. It has screws in it holding it in place. When I open mine the plastic piece pops up and it goes back down when I close it.. It is on the front of my sunroof. But mine is an 05.

Thanks for the input guys. If you guys can take a picture it in it's correct location that would be awesome. I just have to find some mounting screws for it. How it even came off is still a mystery to me.

So if it's the wind deflector then how the hell did it get into the back of the roof? unless it fell off onto the sun roof cover and when the it was pushed back it took the deflector along for a ride. Maybe the screws are still up there....

Pictures guys please!!

Thanks!

Thanks for the concern sleeve. Take you're time. It's not like her KJ is going anywhere fast. :p

That piece is probably from the front on the sunroof opening, and may be the channel the sliding panel rests against when the roof is closed...since there is felt on it.

This part seems to have become the million dollar qestion lol.

I was looking at the sunroof tonight and I cant see where it goes?

Is the wind deflector sapposed to be a thin gray piece of Plastic? because i noticed its broken right in the center and thought there be come more beef to it. How that broke too is beyond me but still no impact on the sun roof operations.

It's the center stiffener for the sunroof pan, but you aren't getting it back into place without pulling the headliner and detaching the pan completely from the roof and dropping it down. And in most cars, the complete sunroof assembly is installed into the body through the windshield opening as one big unit, BEFORE the windshield is installed.

Your dealer needs to see it.

Catastrophic problem? Probably not...don't put anything onto the roof that might flex the roof skin, and you should probably just keep the sunroof closed. There's a chance you could cycle it back and it could get stuck open.

Sorry,
Andy

Something like this:

This isn't a DCX module, but close enough. The center stiffener marked in the picture - the sunroof retracts DOWN, then REARWARDS underneath the stiffener.

Note that the stiffener also keeps the track spacing in place, which is why you don't want to cycle the sunroof and have it get bound up in the track and stuck open.
