Folks,

I am getting ready to change the transmission fluid in my '03 Liberty Renegade. 3.7L V6.

How do I check if the transmission type is 42RLE or 45RFE.

There are different instructions in the repair manual for each transmission type.

Thanks in advance.

It's a 42. And this kind of stuff belongs in the General Discussion section. How To section is for How To postings and the questions related to them...in that respective thread.

Not necessarily, it could be a 45RFE. 2003 was the switch over year, and it happend around April of that year.

If you look on the sticker that is below the door jam on the drivers door, you'll see the build date of your jeep. It should read the month, followed by the year. For example, mine was built in May of 2003, so mine reads 5-03.

And agreed about being in general tech, but no big deal...I'll take care of it.

And (welcome) the site by the way!

Get under your Jeep and look. If the ****** cross member is straight, then you have the 42rle. If the cross memeber is bent towards the back of the Jeep, then its the 45rfe.

You can request the build sheet from jeep.com and that will tell you to right?

Yes, however it takes several days for them to get back to you with a build sheet.

This can be easily determined by not even getting on your knees if you don't want to do that. Open the hood, look on the passenger side fender. If there is a computer mounted on the fender (silver box, with a bunch of wires coming out of it, white sticker attatched....

You have the 45RFE.

If this computer (Transmission Control Module) is absent, you have the 42RLE.

With that said, I can't STAND misinformation...

You can go to any dealer and get a build sheet in 30 seconds - if you are impatient like me. I did. Just give them the last 8 numbers of your vin.

I'm confused, I have the box on the fender that Marlon talks about, and my build date is 5-03 according to the drivers door info. If they switched over in April of 03, how is it that I have the 45rfe? Which ****** is better?

Maby you have one of the last of the 45rfe's used in the KJ? It is a heavier duty transmission.

I'm going to be really mad if you have the 45rfe......Cause I have the same build date that you do, and I WANT THAT ******!!!

The 45 is definitely a much beefier ******, and suits the KJ much better.

Looks like you need to get a copy of your build sheet, that way you can be certain.

Well 2003KJ, you're gonna be upset, cause I just came in from running the final test listed above. My ****** support deffinitely bends towards the back. So I have the right support, and the computer module, also as stated above , my build date is listed as 5-03. I must have got lucky and got some kind of rare bird. My Liberty is a 03 Sport, with absolutely no options. In fact it has a tape cassette instead of cd player. The auto trans is about the only major option it has. I'd be glad to post pics, to show everything I stated, but am not sure how. I'm basically computer illiterate.

This defeats all odds. Taken from my build sheet:

DGBS - All 4-Speed Automatic Transmissions
DG6 - 4-Spd. Automatic 45rfe Transmission
DHAP - Lock-Up Torque Converter
DHNS - Command-Trac Part Time 4WD System
DJJS - Dana 30/186MM Front Axle
DMEP - 3.73 Axle Ratio
DRAS - Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle
EKG - 3.7L V6 Engine
