My driver side rear door on my 02 KJ has been rattling for a while so I decided to pull the door panel off and see what I could find. In doing so I found that there is a metal cable that looks to be broken, any ideas as to what it is for or should be connected to? I have included a couple pictures of what I am referring to.

that's the worm gear for the window regulator.
It should be moving inside a protective plastic sleeve.
Is that plastic sleeve missing/disintegrated?

Also looks like you have tape holding up your glass.
So potentially you have a typical problem with the plastic window regulator mount.

You can find cheap metal mounts on ebay or other sources.

The cable was actually up vertically in inner door to the side of the stationary window on the door. And yes the window is taped because it keeps sliding down.

So to be clear, one end of the worm gear attaches to the plastic window regulator mount that moves the window up and down. Your window does not stay up as where the worm gear attaches to the mount is broken. Replacements that are metal are cheap from eBay. I've already replaced both passenger side mounts. If it's in the inner door like you mentioned use your window switch and 'move' your window up to retract the worm gear as it sounds like it is fully extended.

As said, regulator worm gear. Will need to get a new regulator to fix. Then the window won't slide down on is own anymore either. :D
