Like i recently posted i just bought a nice looking/running kj with 110xxx miles. What should i get looking into that normally needs changes by now? Oh and the old owner told me that once he passed 100k miles he started to use 10w40 oil instead of what it say 10w30. Should i go back to the original or swith to syntetic or am i fine the way it is? I also noticed it has a faint ticking noise. You only hear it when you pop the hood or really close to the front.

Not sure why he thought he needed to use such heavy weight oil. My 04 with over 220,000 miles still runs the same 5-30 Mobil 1 like it has since brand new. No high mileage , just the off the shelf regular full synthetic Mobil 1 oil. Never used any and no issues
As far as a slight ticking some have a slight tick in the engine.
I'd switch all fluids INCLUDING brake fluid and flush the cooling system

Doesn't make sense why the PO switched to 10w40. That is way too thick. I would get that out of there and use 5w30 as recommended in the manual by the engineers that made the vehicle. Either dino or synthetic whichever you want.

I would go by what the engineers that made the vehicle recommended. Just my opinion.

My dad said that I should use 10w-40 and my father is a mechanical engineer. He told my that they tell you to use 10w-30 for gas mileage and also 10w-40 flows the same as 10w-30 but protects like a 40 weight oil.

Which is party true, but also have to rememebr the tolerances for these are much tighter than they used to be as well
But hey carry on just was wondering
I have no issues with high mileage and 5W30 ( what they call for in a 04)

The KJ was designed to use 5w-30. (5 is the cold weight, 30 is the hot )
Conventional or dino oils do not have the better cleaning/lubricating properties of full synthetics.
It is true that for better fuel economy, they recommend the 5W-30.
As an engine wears and has higher mileage, rings and other internal parts do wear so many may consider a good full synthetic "high mileage" formula like Mobil 1.
Fact, our KJ do run hot. On highway yesterday on my scan gauge reader, my temps were steady @ 205 F at 60 mph, when outside temps were only 59F.
Stuck in traffic in stop & go, temps climbed to 215F. Off road in summer things can really cook 225F+ !
If you are not going to cut vents into the hood, in summer it may not be a bad idea to run 10W-40. This really depends on driving requirements, and outside air temps.
In winter, I like the idea of a better flow rate offered by 5w-30 and have been using it year round with no problems.
I run 5W-30 Penzoil Platinum full syn and will use an oil additive LubeGard Bio-tech engine protectant. Jeep seems to like it and gets a bit better mileage with it.
Pulling a PCV line when the engine is really hot, will give an indication how much oil blow by your engine is suffering from. If it lots, a bit thicker oil may very well help.

I like to use Supertech 5w30 conventional for now... after I repair the valve cover gasket leak, I plan to run the same as I do in our 08 Acadia: Mobil Super High Mileage, 5w30.

It's worked for 100+ miles so far... why would it stop? 5w30, 10w30... at operating temperature the viscosity difference is minimal, if at all. I prefer the cold pour points of a 5w30. If I need to bump up to a 30 or 40 mixed weight oil, it's time for a rebuild on the engine.

10w40 seems excessive and extreme to me. Last time I experimented with a significantly thicker oil like that I had decreased horsepower, and lots of lifter tick for far too many seconds on start up (this was in a Mazda 1.8 DOHC 4 cylinder).

I'm not going to dare say I know more than an automotive engineer working for Chrysler/Jeep; I just take their recommendations and real-world observations in my own personal vehicle and adjust slightly from there.

I use Petro Canada Full Synthetic 5W30 for the Titan and Boss Lubricants conventional 5W30 for the Renegade. Boss Lubricants is a company here in Calgary who manufactures and distributes their products locally. Might as well support a local company.

5W30 like recommended. Brand = whatever Wally has on sale.

The Supertech full synth actually gets good reviews from that oil forum.
