I was driving on the freeway and all of the sudden the jeep ****** really bad, so I start to get off and it locks up like I put it in park. Now when I shift into drive, neutral, or reverse it feels like it is shifting and it will rock the jeep a little like its in gear, but will not go anywhere when I hit the gas. It is quiet when in drive but it makes a faint grinding noise while in reverse. Checked fluid is good, no leaks underneath. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does it role if the transfer case is in neutral? If not the rear end may have come apart and locked it up.

If it's 4wd check the transfer case, so if you can roll freely out side the transmission being engaged.
Just to get an idea of where the trouble is, transmission, transfer, Drive shafts, axels, brakes.

If in transfer case in neutral (if your 4wd) it rolls freely then can suspect the transmission has taken a dive.

could have emergency brakes or axel locked up. I Knew somebody who spun out on the interstate when his Nissan truck axel locked up.

If your 2wd check if you drive shaft is still there, I doubt it fall off so quietly.

Would a transfer case failing cause the same symptoms? Or possibly gear selector coming undone ? Well maybe not the selector since it feels like it's going into gear

I doubt if this is it but I had a slow leak from my rear differential and didn't notice it. Eventually it started making a humming sound when I drove, by the time I got it somewhere to get looked at I had burned up the differential because it didn't have any fluid to keep it lubricated. Ended up having to get a new rear end. Could be something to look at.... :/

I did some checking on the jeep and here is what I found,

• rear end has slight leak but not the problem

• transfer case shifts smooth through all gears and car rolls freely in neutral

• transmission
• P - in gear, car wont move
• R - engine revs freely and a faint grinding noise, car rolls freely
• N - engine revs freely, no noise, car rolls freely
• D,1,2 - car won't move, engine bogs when revved as if in gear but holding brakes

So I'm assuming its the ******, unless any of you know of something else I can check.

Sounds like ****** to me.

What does the fluid look like on the dipstick? How does it smell?

If it's questionable in any way, I'd pull the pan and see what you can see.

Ditto. Sorry to say it sounds like toast. Almost bet the fluid will look burnt.

I'm assuming the transfer case wouldn't do this. Almost certainly it's got to be the transmission ,

Someone mentioned something to me about it just being a solenoid. Could it just be that?
I didn't think it would act this way from that. Any ideas?

Sounds pretty mechanical. I'd drop the pan and look but you might be better off getting towed to a trans shop.

I think the only answers are going to be in the pan.
I don't know about solenoids. Sorry
