i dropped off my liberty to get are the surface rust issues (lower door area and under the 3rd brake light) sanded and refinished. i'm amazed at all the rust on a 5 year old car... i know it's new england but i've owned alot of cars and never seen anything like it. my body guy said it would be a good idea to apply some engine oil to the areas prone to rust... said it would give it some protection against the elements. obviously only to areas that are invisible to the eye... i won't be giving it an oil rubdown.:D

I noticed that on my 03 Lib that all the doors at the bottom inside where the outer door skin is folded over was all rusted along the seam. Worse on the right side. It made me worry, because the state where I live is Gestapoesque on rust being a disqualifier for passing a yearly state inspection. It was "bubbling" up the paint, and looked like it was going to be a pain to fix properly and have it stay fixed for any length of time. I heard about the oil thing, but that sounded like an old mechanics tale, I wouldn't do it.

I believe this issue wil be more prevalent in the snow-belt states as opposed to the warmer/dryer states like Kentucky.

We have just as much salt on the roads in the winter as anywhere. They get excited when they say is going to rain and lay the salt out.

And oil should help. Thats basically when they do when you take them in and get the bottom coated.

Sorry, I did not know Kentucky got that much salt on the roads, times change I guess. I remember being in Maryland one winter and they were putting out sand during a snow storm by way of a shovel and a man in the back of a pickup truck and just at the intersections. The fellow I was with who lived there said we don't even have plow-trucks, but the snow will be gone tomorrow.

I was basing my answer on the fact where I live we get over 100 inches of snow a year, which means, more salt, ergo more rust.

I stand corrected on the oil in the door, apparently many folks have used this method to stop current rust, or prevent the occurence of rust through, in the trunk and doors.

under my third brake light the rust is horrible on my 05,and my parents never fixed it before they gave my the libby, its spread to the rubber window seal and left and right along the seam. thats the only rust on the whole truck,my guess is the gasket was bad for the light.

I can understand the oil theory. But where is the real problem that causes rust?
Clear Coat breaking down and salt left, without cleaning.
In Winter I will power wash the Jeep real well with warm, top to bottom with good soap on sponge. The I use a towel to dry all seams under the hood, bottom and sides of doors, and rear hatch/brake light seam, clean and dry.
My thought is if you want additional protection get a can of TremClad clear coat, mask and spray additional areas. A good example of a test I did was the trailer hitch. Bought new hitch, then clear coated the crap out of it 5 coats.
Drove all winter in salt roads, not one speck of rust on that hitch area.
