Sounds like you're pretty new to the world of 4wd and I would suggest you read up on how Jeep's (older) 4wd systems work before you pull any 4wd levers... But here's the gist: PT means that the tc locks the f/r drivelines evenly in 4hi mode. Meaning, it should only be used in circumstances with slippery conditions and you don't need the gearing of 4low. I.e. mud/snow/sand, etc. with little hill climbing, etc. No, this isn't an automated 4wd or awd system. And that's the beauty - you have more control + there's less to go wrong. But that also means that you, as the driver, must anticipate driving correctly for the road/off road conditions.

Lastly, since this is a mechanical system, the switch does nothing but illuminate your dash to inform you of the current 4wd position. If you pay attention to the lever's position, you don't need it but in the case that you might forget, then it could be the difference of a blown tc, or not.
Thank you. Your explanation is consistent with the way we have operated her KJ. She runs in 2WD but on snowy roads will engage 4hi. The part-time light was the puzzler; I didn't understand why it is on constantly and thought it was nominal. This thread has taught me it is due to a switch failure.

Thanks mercdudecbr600. Good to know that the switch is only for the lighton the dash.

Replace with oem. Pay attention to how many positions your tc has when ordering. Spendy but I’ve had aftermarket just not work correctly ie dash light didn’t show correctly

My 2002 Jeep has had this problem since about a year after I bought her.
I looked the pricing of a new switch here in South Africa, and with it only being an indication light I made the choice to leave it as is. I simply "reprogrammed" my mind to the fact that the lights now indicate slightly differently. it still shows very nicely when I'm in low range.. and I've been through so many 4x4 scenarios with it as is...no problems!
Glad that I didn't spend unnecessary funds.

Exactly, if can live with the light on now knowing whatup ,no worries. I happen to have had 3 different lights on and I was on a roll to correct all.
