Today I just noticed that I have an oil leak around where the oil filter goes. My oil level isn't down much if any at all so I think this leak just started. The past couple of days have been cold...-40'c to be exact. I'm guessing (hoping) the oil fllter seal is leaking. My question is, is there anything else in this area that could be leaking? I plan on changing oil and filter next week but I don't want to do it if I need to take it to the dealer for warranty work. I have a 2005 liberty 4x4 3.7l gas.

Snug up the filter and keep a close eye on your oil level... Also the oil pressure sender is threaded in right above the filter and a few have had them leak so thats possible also.

Might want to just swing past the dealer and mention the oil leak and have them do the change and check it out since its under warranty.

You said -40C right???

Last winter, at about -40C or colder, my KJ developed an oil leak as well. Came from around the filter area. So... I changed the oil and filter right then thinking it may have been a crappy oil filter gasket or that the gasket blew out in the cold. Turned out to be the PCV valve. It got blocked by some sludgy stuff. Like when you take the oil cap off and find that brown foamy looking stuff underneath it. Anyways, the PCV was stuffed with this crap and when it froze it caused the PCV valve to pop off and leak a bit of oil, If your's smells like it's burning oil off of the exhaust manifold that could be the problem. All you southerners have no idea how cold cold can be until you live through what we got today. -51C. That's -60F Gawd I'm starting to really hate living this far north. Gimme palm trees and sand over this crap anyday.

Looks like the filter was a tad loose. I was able to turn it about an 8th of a turn quite easily. I was able to run my finger around the oil sender and not find any traces of oil.

Thanks, I checked around the PCV valve area and it's nice and clean. There is a fair bit of wet oil in the drain chute just below the filter. The oil filter itself is also covered with oil, dust, and dirt. This leads me to believe the oil filter gasket has been seeping oil for a while now and now since it's extremely cold it leaks more.
