In my 2002 Jeep Liberty, the ignition lock cylinder was failing. With the key inserted, the cylinder would not turn. I learned from YouTube that if I tapped the back of the key with a mallet, the cylinder would turn again. That worked, but I figured the cylinder was failing and I needed to replace it.

I bought a new Standard brand lock cylinder from a large online auto parts retailer. I easily removed the old cylinder and installed the new Standard one. However, with the new one installed, when I remove the keys and open the door, the bell rings as if the keys are still in the cylinder. I reinstalled the old cylinder, removed the keys, and opened the door, and the bell doesn't ring. Installed the new cylinder, removed the keys, opened the door, and the bell rings.

Am I installing it incorrectly? Is the new cylinder defective? Is there a different brand that I should have purchased?

New cylinder was defective

I went to my local auto parts store and bought a Dorman brand lock cylinder. I installed it, removed the key, opened the door, no bell. I am returning the Standard lock cylinder because it seems to be defective.

The Actuator Pin Assembly which is the rectangular zinc alloy/plastic section that rotates to turn the ignition switch to its various positions...and is inclined to break....has a thin plastic sliver inside it that extends when the ignition key is fully inserted.

This then presses on a seperate normaly-open contact within the ignition switch assembly to tell the ECM/PCM that the key is fully inserted.

Some actuator assemblies when fitted have this "sliver" extended too far out so that even when the ignition key is fully withdrawn...the sliver still pushes on this contact so that you get the "beep" when opening the door.

This can be cured by carefully slicing off a slight bit off the end of this sliver so that it will only make contact with the switch when the key is fully inserted...be careful to not cut off too much!
