Can someone explain to me how my 2002 Liberty Limited's 4 wheel drive system works. There is a lever for 4-Hi,4-Lo, and 2-Hi. What system is this, and how does it work in each mode? Which is the right situation for each use. I just want an educated answer.

That is Command Trac, NP231.

2wd is day to day, dry
4 HI is for use in light off road, and on road in snow. Do not use on dry pavement, damage will occur.
N- Neutral, used for towing behind a motorhome, RV..
4 Lo- For severe off road, like 4 HI except it sends the torque through another set of gears, multiplying it by 2.72.

 ow....now don't ask to much!

I have the same as you and you have as HJ said the Command Trac.

One thing though, you have a limited....let me guess, 3.7 / auto ******? You didn't miss one position on the lever?

Over here all the Limited auto's came with Select Trac...

Another guess ...you have a manual?

Most Limiteds have Selec Trac....but some don't....I've seen Command Trac LTD's here.

I noticed that they left that (Select Trac I) off the list ... to antiquated?
Doesn't exist anymore. The electronic based Selec-trac(called Selec-trac II) replaced it. RIP NV242. I'm not a big fan of electronic 4x4 systems.

Command-trac & Selec-trac I > the rest

Selec-trac II is an electronic based system available on 08 and newer Jeeps.

And its junk, doesnt even have part time 4wd. It has clutches that transfers the torque to the front wheels when needed. In 4low it says the clutches are locked though. Wonder how long it takes those clutches to wear out?

Somewhere between being sane and insane!

2wd is day to day, dry
4 HI is for use in light off road, and on road in ICE. Do not use on WET/dry pavement, damage will occur.

Fixed it for you.

Oh and by the way select trac was a option and never a standard t-case(besides all the US CRD's only) in any KJ.I have a Limited and Command Trac.I have worked on more Limited's with Command Trac's then select trac's,and oddly almost all the Sport's I've worked on had the select trac t-case.

Most Sports and Rene's here (if they are a 4x4, which is rare) are Command Trac....never have seen a Selec Trac Sport in person (CRD's excluded)

And Limiteds here (if a 4x4) are mainly Selec Tracs....have seen them with Command Trac now and then.

See my sig below.

I got the exact KJ I wanted - Jeep Green, Selec-trac, off road package, tow package, no sunroof, cloth seats. It was sitting on a dealer lot too, no real searching involved! Dealer didn't believe me when I told him he had it.

So, 4hi shouldn't be used on wet or dry pavement?

Here in the Ozarks with all the winding roads & wet weather, I usually put it in 4hi to drive to and from work (15 miles each way) at about 60 mph. I don't run it like that on dry pavement. I haven't experienced any hub or differential related issues in over 75,000 miles. It gives me MUCH better control on the roads though.
What would some of the effects of this be? To look for during inspecting?

NO, don't use 4 hi unless it is a seriously low traction situation. Wet roads don't warrant it, but if you lose traction on wet roads and feel the need to put it in 4wd you need better tires.

I know that members here have Selec Trac Sports, but I was just saying never see them here. I'm well aware they exist. :)

Iiiishhh!

The ONLY 4WD mode that is pavement/hard surfaces friendly is Selec-trac's 4 Full Time. All the other modes on either t-case should be used on slippery & loose surfaces ONLY!

This is where I hi-jack your thread :D

Is it true that if you have a Limited model Liberty that you should use the Part-Time 4WD not the Full-Time 4WD on the trails?
I've given it some thought about putting a Select Trac in my Libby but it just isn't worth the conversion...unless I blow up my Command Trac ;)

4 Full is fine for dirt. I use 4 FT and 4 Lo the most on the trails. I do use 4 PT sometimes, just like 4 Hi...
