Hey everyone. New here.
Bought the wife a 03, been a GREAT driver, she loves it. BUT, twice now, and never with me in it, it starts running real rough where she turns around and comes home. When I get in it, it's running beautiful. Yesterday she calls me and says it won't shift. "5000rpm on the freeway". Had her pull over, shut it down for 5 min. Then she says it's running beautiful.
All of this within 3_4 weeks.
And the CEL shows up intermittently.
Any help for this old school shade tree mechanic?

OBD2 Codes should be read and post back any code #s.

In the digital odometer you can try to read the stored code by...
Without starting the Jeep..
Turn Key.. relatively quick in this sequence..
ON- Off-ON -OFF - ON- (leave key in on Position) and it should read out in odometer.

Your transmission is putting itself in limp mode (stays in 2nd gear). You need to pull the error code(s) to find out why.
Golly, I love having a manual trans! ;)

its going to be either shit fluid.. need to be replaced.. bad clutch pack for 4th (which shares 2nd i think ) or a solenoid. i have had this same problem .... if you turn o/d off it wont do this and buy you some time... i drove mine 5000 mile like this with o/d off... when going on highway just turn it on at speed and off when slowing down. i'm assuming you have around 120-130k?

since it is a ****** issue it will only give p0700 with the key trick you need to scan it...

You guys sure we are not jumping the gun on the trans issue?
The engine must be running correctly, sensors & engine in tune shall we say, for the trans to shift right as well.
I agree the key trick will only show the basic code and a good shop OBD2 scanner would be best.
I would like to hear from grmpyoman the OP to see what codes he has before jumping to conclusions.

Start with having the battery tested at a parts store, and cleaning all battery/ground connections. Chrysler products seem to be very sensitive to battery/connection problems. I've seen all kinds of strange symptoms when a battery starts to go.

was that the only code?
P0300 is a general misfiring code.

Check the spark plugs and coils.
the oem ZFR6F-11G are recommended

Install all new plugs,(gapped properly) they should be replaced every 25K miles as these coil packs spark em hot!
Get it read by a shop scanner and more details/location of the misfire may appear!

Yes that was only code.
And this only happened twice. (The rough engine).
Shut it off, start it back up, it runs perfectly.
Guess it's down to the mechanic with good diagnostic equipt.
