Hey guys,

I am new to this forum and I just recently bought a Jeep KJ Liberty with 3.7Ltr engine and 5 speed manual transmission. I live in the middle east and temperatures go over 50 degrees celcius therefore original Mopar MTF sounds too thin for me. My gearbox has been feeling a bit sticky too lately. Is it safe for me to use SAE 80 or 90 gear oil GL-4 and synchro safe with regards to the temperature I am facing?

Apologies for raising this question again.....

Regards,
Rahul Jones

the 5spd (NV3550) as well as the 6spd (NSG370) manual transmissions take gear oil with the Chrysler MS-9224 specification. Pennzoil Synchromesh
Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid | United States

I don't know how to find that in the UAE, sorry. No matter what you need to make sure the product you buy has MS-9224 listed on the bottle. Otherwise it's the wrong stuff.

After finding the alternatives were more expensive than the dealer sold Mopar fluid I went and bought the original Mopar manual transmission fluid also got it replaced. The old fluid was black but I didn't see any copper content reflecting in the oil or was any over metal shavings found in the magnetic drain plug.

But from this transmission fluid change I was hoping to get the shifter to be smoother which it is when cold now. But after 30mins of driving, it gets a bit sticky. (It was feeling sticky throughout cold to warm before the fluid change). Please help!!!

"Sticky" can be:
worn synchros
clutch not disengaging fully

Maybe give it a little more time in there to get everything lubed and cleaned up? I have no idea how long the old fluid was in there, but the service interval is only 30k miles.

Clutch could be packing up....replaced mine twice now!

Check the level of the clutch fluid in the reservoir.....make sure fluid is at the level marked on the outside of the reservoir. The clutch Master Cylinder, Slave Cylinder, Reservoir, piping and Fluid all come as one assembled unit....you cannot drain the fluid but can top it up. I used a large syringe to suck out the reservoir, add new fluid, repeat a few times every so often.

I have seen on some KJ sites owners of manual transmissions using ATF +4 with mixed results!:emotions34:
