loud gear switching?

Is it normal for my kj to make loud noises when I switch gears (park,reverse,drive)??

I was sitting at an atm and had to move up a few inches and I could really hear the sound because it echoed off the ATM. Noticed it kind of jumps when I put in reverse or drive too. like takes a second then jolts..

is this normal?

Yes. All Chrysler automatic transmissions are this way. If it wasn't making those noises, then there would be a problem. Fords also make the noise, but they aren't as loud as Chryslers.

nice. I was gonna be pissed if my trans was going.. and the jolting? that's also on the normal side?

does it sound like an extremely fast ticking sound? If so, that's normal-

now for the jolting, I don't know.. sometimes mine jumps really hard. I just laugh and keep chuggin.

Try stepping on the brakes a little harder when putting it in gear.

Should make it a little less "violent" when the transmisson engages

Same here ... Just verify your transmission oil to be sure its ok ... it nevers hurts and does cost anything but 1 min of your time ... (counting the time to drop a king can of bud the second before checking it)...

how do I do that? visually? look for play?

Best way is to drop the shaft, but you can get under it and pry on the centers with a big screw drive. Don't nick the rubber caps. You can grab the shaft by hand and pull up and down rotate all four ways and try front and back in front of the u-joints, shaft side not at the yoke or pinion.
Not hard to do at all.
