I agree with pretty much all the points here. The car platform has always been a sore spot with me with all of the compact SUV's. I had considered a Ford Escape for along time, but the front drive based platform with an independant rear suspension had turned me off even though I liked the styling, fuel economy and power. Would it have done ok for what I do most of the year? Probably, but there's a few month period of the year where I use a 4x4 for what it should be used for, and I don't believe any of the other compacts like the RAV 4, Escape, or Compass, and maybe even the Patriot would cut it.

I think anyone looking for a serious 4x4 should stick with a RWD based, live rear axle platform.
