I don't think the fender was there when he started the crossing. And having had my fender flare come off after hitting a deer, I don't think it's possible to "fall off" without noticing it.

After taking my flares off to bed line them either these were not on proper or they are pulling your leg. I have been through some heavy mud and muskeg with my KJ and never had any issues with flares thanks to the million clips and plastic rivets holding them on.
