I paid the guy $6 but have had them give me a cup full before for free.
We have glass shops like speedy auto, they generally are pretty good.

Or, you could just wash them like regular and use Duragloss #755 Nu-Glass.

Although, I prefer to wash them, clay them, machine polish them, and then add Aquapel/Rain-X. Slickest windows EVER!!!

Cerium Oxide is a good route too, though.

Good write-up too. Nice pictures and good descriptions.

Have no clue what you guys are talking about... Never heard of doing any of this. To me, gas stations and windex is about the extent of my windshield washing. (well, if you include the little wash button on the wiper lever that is 3 ways):D Learn something new everyday.

Visibility is everything especially at night in the rain. Here we get lots of that.
I find that tree sap and other air-borne chemicals like dumped jet fuel just cakes the windshield. My kj sit outside 100% of the time, so it is imperative to have the glass clean.
I will never use the gas station squeegees as they are contaminated with fuel, and will offer a bucket of #$@t to the windshield. Instead I carry a home made spray bottle consisting of 2 oz alcohol, 2oz fantastic, 4 oz of 20-10 windshield cleaner conentratehttp://www.allbatterysalesandservice.com/browse.cfm/4,2600.html, and the rest is Windex.
This mixture keeps the windshield in top condition, and will stop any wiper blade chatter, and works on mirrors and windshield helping to repel water.

Does the cerium oxide....(or Duragloss #755 Nu-Glass)....get rid of those stubborn hard water spots that never seem to go away....no matter what I've tried so far......?
The Cerium Oxide is a glass polish and works well at removing wax, gunk, and dirt build ups. It will when used with a buffer also remove fine scratches.
As far as hard water spots, it probably will. I know when ever I have had streaking problems from what ever contamination in or on the glass surface, it does work well.
If your glass is really dirty you may have to polish the glass twice pressing hard to remove the contamination.
Try it, let us know if it works for you!

Depends on how etched the water spots are.

I have removed some bad water spots with #755 by hand. Takes some work sometimes, but it can do the job. I have had a few cars, though, that needed a machine polisher to remove some nasty ones. Water spots etching into water spots.

You can get a cheap felt pad for use with a drill and use the cerium oxide water mix to remove them. That would be a good combination. Be sure to keep the solution wet. Do not let it get dry while polishing.

Thanks for the info LibertyTC I like how you're recommending using a chemical mixtures rather than a testimonial to some Maguires product.

Typically all I need to clean off my windshield are those pesky bugs that go splat on it however your idea would be great for those of us with sand abrasions from those cross desert road trips we occasionally make. Or those of us who have a windshield scarred by the use of bad wipers.

Thanks LF, Go ahead and mix up my "special" cleaner, you will like it !
The fantastic part in the mixture really helps to remove grime and streaks of left over oil films! I also use that mixture on the blades when it rains.
Still nothing is better than a good cerium-oxide polish, twice a year.
