Hello:

The horn pad on my 2002 Jeep Liberty Renegade does not work when it's hot outside.

The horn still works, as when I lock the car via the fob, the horn still blows. However, when I try pushing the horn on the steering wheel when it's hot outside, no horn action  It does work when cold outside, though.

I brought it to a mechanic, and they said that the horn pad is combined with the airbag. If I wanted to replace the horn pad, I would need to replace the entire airbag, too (at around $700 to $800). The stealership essentially confirmed this.

Has anyone experienced this issue? Any work around, or solution?

I was thinking about getting an aftermarket horn. Probably would need to add a separate button, though. Anyone tried that?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,

T

The horn switch is molded into the air bag assembly.
What has me baffled is that it works when it is cold.. but not when it is hot?
That may point to an electrical connection problem, in a connector or something.
Or that in fact the switch itself is damaged, requiring replacement.
I'll look at the FSM and see what tests are recommended.
PM sent with further FSM testing info.

Yep, works when cold, but not if it's hot outside.

After researching this for a while, I've seen a few posts stating that if it gets very cold outside that their Liberty starts beeping continuously on it's own - even if no one is in the car.

Thanks for the info! Going to an electrical specialist in the next few days. :emotions34:

For years one of my customers had his horn wired up to a standard home wall switch screwed to the dash in an old 80's Buick.

DAMN!!!!! Wish I'd took a picture.

Yeah, had a custom button installed today (right by the light bar switch). Works great!

Did they disconnect the main horn button, or does it still work?
