Heater core hoses routing

I am trying to figure out which one of the two hoses from the water pump to the heater core (55037877AA) is the supply hose and which one is the return hose. Any idea anybody?

What is even more weird is that they are different sizes. One of them is 5/8'' and the other one is 3/4''. What's the point of that? I guess they can't pump more coolant than what gets out and vice versa...

Usually the input hose is connected to, or really close to the water pump. I'm just. A general grease monkey, not a Jeep specialist, so the hose routing doesn't pop immediately to mind. Never heard a reason for the two sizes, but many vehicles (especially GM) have been that way for years.

From the diagram in the FSM, it looks like the hose coming FROM the heater core connects down close to the thermostat.
