Got a 07 kj with an auto, no dipstick, the thing makes a grinding noise at about 25 mph until it has been driven about 5 miles then it goes away. The noise gets louder if you drive in 4lo then back into 2hi the next morning. Also the thing slips when in 4 lo and going forward. Well not really slip....just engages funny. The thing will move but after 10 feet you feel it lurch, I got video pof the tack while doing this, it only does it when the vehicle is cold and doesnt do it in reverse. I changed the lube in the TC and it was black and smelled funny and had metal shavings in it. The thing is about to go off warrenty and the dealer is trying to tell us nothings wrong with it.

PUSH ON THE WARRANTY. They are trying to dodge paying for it. If it is black and has filings in it in that short of a time DO have a problem. They should fix it.

Question: Did you buy it used?

If so - take it straight back to the dealer you purchased it from and ask them to repair the transfer case. Grinding is NEVER a noise you should hear on the KJ, especially when switching between the 4x4 settings.
