Fuel gauge fluctuates

My 19 yr old daughter has a 04 Liberty. Yesterday she said that while driving, her gas gauge went from 1/2 tank down to almost empty and back to 1/2 tank. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes this has happened to me before. I can't say for sure, but I have come to think that on my KJ that it happens when I park on some kind of hill for awhile. Then while driving it tends to correct itself after a little bit.

Thanks, This happened while she was driving down a pretty level road... I told her to keep an eye on the gauge, for the next couple of days.

Time for a new sending unit. Might as well change fuel pump and filter sence you'll have access to it all if you decide to change the sending unit.

Gas gauge is flaky, horn keeps going off on it's own, and a clicking relay sound from under the hood. I'd say you have an electrical gremlin, find what's clicking and go from there.
